Menara (RAK) is small, modern and easy — a single passenger complex with a striking latticework facade, sitting just ~6 km / 15 minutes from the medina. Arrival is straightforward: passport control, a short bag-claim, then the taxi rank and pre-booked-transfer meeting area outside. The main hassle is the immigration queue at peak.

Marrakech Menara is the friendliest big-city airport in Morocco to land at, and after years of meeting guests here I still find it refreshingly manageable. It is genuinely close to town — about 6 km, roughly 15 minutes by road — so unlike Casablanca there is no long transfer hanging over your arrival. The newer terminal is bright and modern, with that distinctive white geometric lattice across the front, and the whole thing is compact enough that you walk from gate to exit in minutes rather than trekking through endless corridors.

The arrival flow is simple. You disembark, follow the crowd to passport control, fill in the small arrival card if cabin crew did not hand one out (have your riad address and a pen ready — it speeds things up), then collect bags from one of a handful of belts. Once through, you step into the arrivals hall where transfer drivers wait with name boards just beyond the doors, ATMs and a currency exchange sit along the wall, and the official taxi rank is straight outside. There is free airport wifi, though it can be patchy when a few flights land at once.

My honest warning is the immigration queue. When several European flights land together — late morning and early evening especially — the passport hall backs up badly, and I have seen guests wait anywhere from twenty minutes to well over an hour. There is little you can do except be near the front of the plane and have your arrival card already filled in. Do not panic if your driver is not visible the second you exit; pre-booked transfer drivers know the flight and will be waiting, and there is a paid short-stay area where they hold.

Practical arrival tips I give everyone: pull out a little cash from the ATM before you leave (you want small dirham notes for tips and taxis), grab a local SIM or eSIM if you have not arranged data, and ignore anyone inside the hall offering "help" with bags or a "better taxi" — stick to the official rank or your named driver. Then relax: within half an hour of clearing the queue you can be in your riad courtyard with a glass of mint tea. For a first arrival with luggage, a pre-booked transfer to the riad door is the single best money you will spend.
