Timitar is Agadir’s free open-air music festival celebrating Amazigh (Berber) culture and world music, usually held in summer (around July). On stages across the Atlantic resort city, Amazigh artists share the bill with global and African acts, drawing big, relaxed crowds for several nights of seaside concerts.

Timitar is the festival I point coastal-leaning travellers toward. The word means “signs” in the Amazigh language, and the festival’s whole identity is built around celebrating Amazigh (Berber) culture and putting it in dialogue with the wider musical world. It is held in Agadir, the sunny, modern beach city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast and the gateway to the Souss region, which has a deep Amazigh heritage.

It usually takes place in summer, most often in July, across several days. Like Mawazine and Gnaoua, the bulk of the concerts are free and open-air, staged in big public squares and seafront venues. The lineup mixes revered and emerging Amazigh musicians — the rwais troubadour tradition, raïss and modern Berber pop — with international, African and Moroccan stars, so it feels both rooted and global.

Expect a relaxed, family-friendly, holiday atmosphere — this is Agadir, after all, where the festival energy mingles with beach days and long warm evenings. The crowds are large but easygoing, and the setting by the ocean keeps things breezy even in midsummer. It is a great festival for travellers who want music plus sun, sand and a calmer pace than the imperial cities.

Worth planning around? If you are heading to the Atlantic coast or the Anti-Atlas in summer, absolutely — it is an easy, enjoyable highlight that costs nothing for the main shows. I sometimes combine it with the Souss-Massa region and an Anti-Atlas extension. Check the year’s dates and book a seafront hotel early, as Agadir fills up in peak summer.
