Essaouira is windy year-round thanks to the Atlantic trade winds, but it is calmest in autumn — September and October bring the gentlest air, ideal for beach days. Winter is moderately breezy; the wind peaks in spring and summer (April–August), the prime kitesurfing season.
I'll be honest from the start: Essaouira is never truly still. The town's nickname is 'Windy City of Africa' for good reason — the Atlantic trade winds, the alizés, funnel along this coast almost daily, and that constant breeze is woven into the place's whole character. So the real question isn't whether it'll be windy, but which months are gentlest, and there the answer is clear: autumn.
September and October are the calmest stretch of the year, the window when the summer trade winds finally relax. I time beach-focused trips for exactly then. You can sit on the sand without being sandblasted, eat lunch at the harbour without your napkin taking flight, and feel the town soften. It's a noticeably different Essaouira — gentler, warmer-feeling, and the only time I'd confidently promise a guest a still afternoon by the sea.
Winter, from November to February, is moderately breezy rather than wild — the wind eases off its summer peak but never disappears, and you'll still want a windproof layer on the ramparts. Then comes the build-up: from around April the trade winds strengthen, and through May to August they reach full force. That's why the bay becomes a kitesurfing and windsurfing mecca in those months — fantastic if you've come to ride the wind, frustrating if you've come to sunbathe.
So my practical advice: if calm is what you crave, come in October. If you want to harness the wind for watersports, come April through August when it blows hardest and most reliably. And whenever you visit, pack a light windbreaker — even on the calmest autumn day, a sea breeze will find you here. It's simply the nature of this beautiful, blustery little port.
