Marrakech is the best short-stay base — direct flights from Europe, and a complete medina-souks-gardens-palaces experience plus a day trip to the Atlas, all within a long weekend. For a calmer weekend, fly into Marrakech and decamp to Essaouira on the coast.

For a weekend or a short city break, Marrakech is the obvious and correct answer. It is the most directly connected city to Europe — three to four hours from most hubs, often on cheap direct flights — so you lose almost no time getting there. And once you arrive, a complete, intense, satisfying Morocco experience is packed into a small, walkable area: the Jemaa el-Fnaa, the souks, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Majorelle and Secret gardens, and a dozen rooftop dinners. You can feel like you have genuinely 'done' a great city in two or three days here.

A good Marrakech long weekend has a natural shape. Day one: settle into a riad, ease into the medina, sunset and dinner at a rooftop overlooking the Koutoubia. Day two: the palaces and tombs in the morning, the souks and a hammam in the afternoon, the food stalls of the square at night. Day three: a half- or full-day escape to the Atlas mountains or the Agafay desert for a change of scene before you fly out. That gives you city, culture, food, and a taste of landscape without ever feeling rushed.

If you have the appetite, the Agafay 'stone desert' is the short-stay secret weapon. It is not the real Sahara — it is rocky rather than dunes — but it is under an hour from Marrakech, and you can have a desert-camp dinner under the stars, a camel ride, and that big-sky silence on a weekend without the long drive east. For people who want a desert taste but only have a few days, I send them to Agafay rather than promising the impossible Merzouga round-trip.

For a calmer weekend, the smart hybrid is to fly into Marrakech and immediately transfer to Essaouira — three breezy hours to the coast. You swap intensity for a walled fishing town, fresh seafood, beach air, and a far gentler pace, and you are still close enough to the airport for an easy flight home. My honest take: Marrakech alone is the best high-energy short break, Marrakech-plus-Essaouira is the best relaxed one, and trying to add the real Sahara to a weekend is the one ambition I would gently talk you out of.
