The best sunrise in Morocco is over the Erg Chebbi dunes from a Sahara camp — the sand turns pink and the air is still. Other great ones: Aït Benhaddou before the tour buses, the Marrakech medina rooftops at dawn over the Atlas, and the Atlantic light at Essaouira and Taghazout for early surfers.
The desert sunrise is the one worth setting an alarm for. From a camp at Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, you slip out before dawn, climb the dune above the tents, and watch the first light spill across the sand — it comes up pink and cold and absolutely silent, with the dune ridges throwing long blue shadows that shrink as the sun lifts. After a night under the stars it's a near-spiritual way to wake, and it's the single reason I push every client to actually sleep in the desert rather than day-trip it.
Aït Benhaddou at sunrise is the photographer's secret. The kasbah that's mobbed by midday is empty and golden at first light — get there before the buses and you'll have the whole earthen citadel, and the soft warm glow on its towers, almost to yourself. The same logic applies to Chefchaouen's blue lanes: dawn is the only time the famous staircases are quiet enough to photograph without crowds, and the early light on the blue walls is gorgeous.
In Marrakech, a riad rooftop at sunrise is a quietly magical thing most visitors miss. The medina is still, the storks are settling on the Badi Palace and the Koutoubia, and on a clear morning you can see the snow-dusted High Atlas glowing behind the rooftops before the day's heat and noise build. It's the calmest the Red City ever gets.
On the coast, sunrise over the Atlantic at Essaouira or the surf beaches at Taghazout near Agadir is the dawn patrol's reward — cool, breezy, and beautiful, with the early surfers paddling out into the gold. Honestly, the through-line for every great Moroccan sunrise is the same: you have to commit to the early start, but the places that are crowded and hot by 10am are serene and luminous at 6.
