From Marrakech, plan a minimum of 3 days and 2 nights for Merzouga (Erg Chebbi), since each way is roughly a 9-hour drive. A 2-day version is possible but very rushed. Closer Zagora can be done in 2 days. For a relaxed pace, 4 days is ideal.
The right number of days depends almost entirely on which desert and where you start. From Marrakech, Merzouga and the big Erg Chebbi dunes are about 9 hours away by road, so the standard and most sensible trip is 3 days / 2 nights. Day one drives to the dunes (with stops at Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades or Todra gorges), the second day is the camel trek and a night in a desert camp, and day three drives back. That structure gives you a genuine desert night without spending the whole time in the car.
You can do Merzouga in 2 days, but be honest with yourself about what that means: roughly 18 hours of driving split over two days, with barely a few hours actually in the dunes. It works only if your schedule is truly fixed and a quick taste is better than nothing. We don't recommend it as a first choice because the desert is the reward, and a 2-day trip gives you very little of it.
If you want the desert to feel relaxed rather than a dash, 4 days is the sweet spot. The extra day lets you slow down on the route, explore the gorges or an oasis properly, and enjoy the camp without an early-morning rush back. It also leaves room for a sunrise and a slower breakfast in the dunes.
Zagora is the exception: because it's closer to Marrakech (around 7 hours), a 2-day Zagora trip is reasonable, though the dunes are smaller. So the short version — 2 days for a quick Zagora taste, 3 days minimum for proper Merzouga dunes, and 4 days if you want to actually enjoy it rather than endure the driving.
