Overview

2 days, Zagora to Draa Valley

This 2-day Zagora itinerary is the quickest, most affordable taste of the Moroccan desert, set along the Draa Valley - the country's longest river and a 200km ribbon of date palms. Day one takes in the famous "Tombouctou 52 jours" caravan sign, the Amezrou oasis with its old kasbahs and silver workshop, and a sunset camel trek to a Berber camp in the Tinfou or Erg Lihoudi dunes. Day two brings a desert sunrise and a scenic drive back through the palm groves. Zagora's dunes are lower and scrubbier than Merzouga's Erg Chebbi, but its proximity to Marrakech makes it the easy choice when time is short.

Suitability

Is this 2-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around an unhurried, relaxed rhythm — long mornings, time to linger over mint tea and few box-ticking days. Days are gentle with little strenuous walking, so it suits most travellers, including families and first-time visitors to Morocco. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

Day 1: Draa Valley, Amezrou Oasis & Sunset Camp — Zagora
Zagora

Day 1

Draa Valley, Amezrou Oasis & Sunset Camp

Zagora

Zagora is the gateway to the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river, whose ribbon of date palms threads the desert in a band of green. Arriving in town you are greeted by the legendary painted sign "Tombouctou 52 jours" - 52 days to Timbuktu by camel caravan - a reminder that this was once a launchpad for trans-Saharan trade. After exploring the nearby Amezrou oasis, its old kasbahs and a silver workshop kept alive from the area's Jewish heritage, you head to the dunes. In the late afternoon a camel carries you across the sand to a Berber camp for a tagine dinner, drumming and a brilliant desert night sky.

Zagora

Day 2

Desert Sunrise & the Palm-Grove Road

Zagora

After breakfast you ride or walk back to the vehicle and return through the Draa Valley, where the contrast between green palmeraie and bare desert mountains is at its finest in the morning light. There is time to wander a riverside ksar, buy local dates - the Draa is famous for them - and enjoy a final mint tea before your onward transfer. Compact and affordable, Zagora packs an authentic taste of the Sahara into a short, easy escape.

2-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

Is Zagora or Merzouga better for the desert?

It depends on time. Zagora is much closer to Marrakech and cheaper, making it perfect for a quick overnight, but its dunes are low and scrubby. Merzouga is a longer drive (around 560km) yet rewards you with the towering 150-metre Erg Chebbi dunes. Choose Zagora for speed and the Draa Valley scenery, Merzouga for the iconic big-dune Sahara.

How far is Zagora from Marrakech?

Zagora is roughly 360km from Marrakech, about a 7-hour drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass via Ouarzazate and Agdz. It is far closer than Merzouga, which is why it is the go-to desert overnight for travellers on a tight schedule - many do it as a two-day round trip from Marrakech.

What does the "52 days to Timbuktu" sign mean?

Zagora's painted sign reads "Tombouctou 52 jours", marking the historic camel-caravan journey time of 52 days from here across the Sahara to Timbuktu in Mali. It is a nod to Zagora's role as a launch point for trans-Saharan trade and is the town's most photographed landmark.

Are Zagora's dunes as good as Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga?

Honestly, no. The Tinfou and Erg Lihoudi dunes near Zagora are small and partly vegetated compared with Merzouga's Erg Chebbi or M'Hamid's Erg Chigaga. Zagora's strength is the lush Draa Valley scenery and its accessibility; for dramatic, towering sand seas you should head further south to Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga.

Is the Zagora desert camp luxury?

Zagora camps are generally simpler than Merzouga's top-end options, ranging from basic shared-tent bivouacs to comfortable camps with private tents and proper beds. All include a Berber dinner, breakfast and campfire, but if you want a true luxury camp with en-suite tents you will find more choice at Erg Chebbi.

What is the best time of year to visit Zagora?

October to December and March to May are ideal, with warm days and cool nights. Summer is fiercely hot, often above 45C, and best avoided. Winter days are pleasant but nights are cold, so always pack a warm layer for the desert camp whatever the season.

What is there to see beyond the dunes at Zagora?

The Draa Valley itself is the highlight - endless palm groves and mud-brick ksour. You can also visit the Amezrou oasis and its Jewish-heritage silver workshops, climb Jbel Zagora for valley views, browse the local souk (Wednesdays and Sundays) and buy the region's famous dates.

Can I do Zagora as a 2-day trip from Marrakech?

Yes. The most popular way to visit is a two-day round trip from Marrakech: a long drive south on day one ending with a sunset camel trek and overnight camp, then a desert sunrise and the return drive on day two. This standalone itinerary focuses on the desert portion once you have reached Zagora.

Insider tips

Before you go

  • October to December and March to May give the most pleasant weather
  • Buy local dates in Zagora - the valley is one of Morocco's date baskets
  • Carry cash; ATMs are limited and many camps are cash-only
  • Pack a warm layer - even Zagora's desert nights get cold
  • Tip your cameleer and camp crew in small notes at the end
