Yes. Tetouan is about 60km (just over an hour) southeast of Tangier — a UNESCO-listed medina with strong Andalusian-Spanish character, whitewashed lanes and authentic souks. Frequent grand taxis and buses make it an easy, atmospheric, and refreshingly untouristy day trip.

Tetouan is one of northern Morocco's most underrated cities, and it makes a rewarding day trip from Tangier — about 60 kilometres southeast, just over an hour by road through green Rif foothills. What sets it apart is its heritage: Tetouan was shaped by Andalusian refugees from Spain and later by the Spanish protectorate, so its whitewashed medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has a distinct Hispano-Moorish character you do not find elsewhere in the country.

The medina is the reason to come, and it is a beauty — compact, gleaming white, and remarkably authentic because it sees relatively few foreign tourists. You wander lanes of artisan workshops, busy local souks, and small leather and woodwork ateliers where the trades feel lived-in rather than staged. There is also a lovely Spanish-built new town with wide boulevards and a different architectural flavour, plus a worthwhile archaeological museum and the famous local school of traditional arts and crafts.

Transport is easy and cheap. Grand taxis shuttle frequently between Tangier and Tetouan, and there are buses too, so you do not need a car; a private driver simply adds comfort and the option to continue to the coast. Because Tetouan is so close, some travellers pair it with Chefchaouen further south, though that makes for a longer day — on its own, Tetouan is a relaxed few hours of medina-wandering and a good lunch.

I will be honest that Tetouan does not have a single blockbuster monument; its appeal is the atmosphere of a genuine, working Andalusian-Moroccan city largely off the tourist radar. Hiring a local guide for the medina helps you read the layers of history and find the best craft workshops. Come for the authenticity and the distinctive Spanish-tinged character, keep the pace gentle, and you have a memorable, crowd-free day out from Tangier.
