Suitability

Is this 2-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around an unhurried, relaxed rhythm — long mornings, time to linger over mint tea and few box-ticking days. Days are gentle with little strenuous walking, so it suits most travellers, including families and first-time visitors to Morocco. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 2 days and want to see Tangier, Cap Spartel, Asilah
  • You want a route shaped by people who run it on the ground, not a generic template
  • You prefer comfort over roughing it — riads, hotels and a private vehicle throughout

Why private

Why book this as a private tour?

On a group coach you follow the crowd's clock. On a private Serenity itinerary the day bends to you: a slower morning in the medina, an extra hour at a viewpoint, dinner moved earlier for the kids. You travel with your own licensed driver-guide and air-conditioned vehicle, sleep in hand-picked riads rather than chain hotels, and skip the daily wait for 30 strangers to reboard the bus.

Day 2: Cap Spartel, Hercules Caves & Asilah

Asilah · 110 km · Approx. 2-2.5 hours total (Cap Spartel + Asilah loop) drive

In the afternoon, continue south to Asilah, a whitewashed walled town of blue-trimmed lanes, Portuguese ramparts and vivid street murals.

2-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

How many days do you need in Tangier?

Two days is a comfortable amount of time. One day covers the Kasbah, the medina, the American Legation and Café Hafa, while a second day lets you explore the coast at Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules and visit the nearby town of Asilah. Tangier also works as a one-day trip from southern Spain.

Is Tangier worth visiting?

Yes. Tangier blends a hilltop Kasbah and atmospheric medina with sweeping views across the Strait of Gibraltar, a rich literary and international history, and easy access to coastal sights like Cap Spartel, the Caves of Hercules and Asilah. Its Mediterranean character makes it distinct from Morocco's imperial cities.

Where do the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet near Tangier?

The two seas meet at Cap Spartel, a headland about 14km west of Tangier topped by an 1864 lighthouse. It marks the northwestern tip of Africa and the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, with views toward the Spanish coast on clear days.

What are the Caves of Hercules?

The Caves of Hercules are a partly natural, partly man-made grotto near Cap Spartel, about 14km from Tangier. According to legend Hercules rested here. The caves are famous for a sea-facing opening whose silhouette resembles a "Map of Africa," one of the most photographed spots on the coast.

How far is Asilah from Tangier?

Asilah lies about 46km south of Tangier, roughly a 45-minute drive or a short train ride. This whitewashed Atlantic town is known for its Portuguese-era ramparts, blue-and-white medina lanes and vibrant street murals, making it an easy and rewarding half-day trip.

What is the Tangier American Legation?

The Tangier American Legation is a historic building in the medina that was the first piece of American public property outside the United States. It recalls that Morocco was the first country to recognise US independence, in 1777, and now houses a museum of art, documents and cultural history.

Is Café Hafa worth visiting?

Café Hafa is a terraced clifftop café that has served mint tea above the Strait of Gibraltar since 1921. Famous past visitors include writer Paul Bowles, the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. It is a classic spot for sunset views over the sea, though it can get crowded in peak season.

Can you visit Tangier on a day trip from Spain?

Yes. Fast ferries from Tarifa cross the Strait of Gibraltar to Tangier in around one hour, and there are also crossings from Algeciras. Many visitors do a day trip, though staying overnight lets you enjoy the Kasbah, Café Hafa and the coast at a relaxed pace.

What is the Grand Socco in Tangier?

The Grand Socco, officially Place du 9 Avril 1947, is the main square linking Tangier's modern town with the medina. From here you can pass through the gates into the old town and down to the smaller Petit Socco, a café-lined square that was the heart of the international-era city.

Is Tangier safe for tourists?

Tangier is generally safe for visitors who take normal precautions. The main nuisance is persistent unofficial "faux guides" in the medina; politely decline them or agree on a guide and price in advance. Keep valuables discreet and use official or app-based taxis, especially after dark.
