| Good for | A cool mountain retreat from the heat · Swimmable Akchour Waterfalls · Comfortably cool nights · Early-light photography before the crowds |
August matches July as Chefchaouen's warmest, busiest stretch, but the Rif altitude again keeps it comfortable where the interior bakes. Daytime highs around 31°C are hot in direct sun, yet the evenings cool and the nights stay pleasant — a clear advantage over Fes or Marrakech. This is peak season for the blue city, with the famous lanes thronged from mid-morning, so an early start for photography and a shaded, rooftop-café midday are the keys to enjoying the medina without battling heat and crowds.
The mountains remain a strong draw and a natural cool-down. The Akchour Waterfalls are at their most popular — shaded riverside paths and pools to swim in make a perfect escape from the warmth — while Talassemtane's cedar trails are best walked early. In town, the circuit leans on the edges of the day: dawn and golden-hour photography around Rue Targa and Bab El Ain, the Kasbah Museum and Ras El Ma in shade by day, and the Spanish Mosque hike kept for the cooler evening light over the blue rooftops.
August's appeal is the same as July's: a cooler, greener, calmer mountain retreat from the baking south, popular with Moroccan and international visitors alike. The trade-offs are peak crowds and the highest prices of the year, so book well ahead and start early. For travellers who want warm bright days, swimmable waterfalls and comfortably cool nights — and who plan around the midday sun and the crowds — August delivers a lively, scenic blue-city summer.
