May is warm, green and reliably bright in Chefchaouen — arguably the finest all-round month. Daytime highs around 23°C are comfortable for both wandering the blue medina and hiking the surrounding Rif, the hills still hold their spring green, and rain has eased to the occasional brief shower. Evenings are pleasantly mild for rooftop dinners over the blue rooftops, and the clean late-spring light keeps the medina at its photogenic best from the early lanes to the sunset viewpoint.
It is an excellent month for the mountains. With dry trails and settled weather, the Akchour Waterfalls — natural pools, the Bridge of God arch, riverside paths — and the cedar trails of Talassemtane National Park are at their most rewarding, the air fresh and pine-scented above the town. In the medina, the full circuit runs easily: early photography on Rue Targa, the Kasbah Museum and Ras El Ma by day, Rif goat cheese and mint tea on a rooftop, and the Spanish Mosque hike for a warm, clear sunset.
May is busy but not overwhelming, and prices, while above the winter floor, remain gentler than peak summer. With warm, dry, dependable weather, lingering green hillsides and the whole Rif accessible, it is a standout choice for travellers who want the blue city and real mountain walking in one comfortable trip — going early to the famous lanes to beat the mid-morning photographers.
Every tour is private, led by a licensed local guide, and fully customisable to your interests and pace. Prices are per person based on two travellers.
