| Good for | Peak-summer escape from inland heat · Peak kitesurfing & windsurfing · Cool, wind-conditioned days · Vibrant summer medina & harbour |
August is Essaouira at its summer peak, and still gloriously mild while the interior roasts. Daytime highs sit around 24°C — the warmest the town really gets — kept comfortable by strong, steady trade winds and bright, dry skies. The blue-and-white medina, the Skala ramparts and the working harbour are at their busiest, the wide beach is full of kitesurfers and windsurfers, and the constant Atlantic breeze keeps the whole place cool when Marrakech and Fes are near 38°C.
As in July, the powerful wind is both the attraction and the catch, which is why August rates as good rather than perfect: it is excellent for wind sports and for escaping the heat, but plain beach-lounging is a windswept, sandblasted affair, and a windbreaker is essential even now. Lean into it — kitesurf or windsurf in strong, reliable conditions, walk the ramparts and harbour, browse the medina's art and thuya-wood studios, and enjoy fresh grilled sardines straight from the port grills.
August's draw is the same powerful contrast: a cool, breezy, vibrant coast a short drive from the inland furnace, which makes Essaouira a popular peak-season escape for Moroccan and international visitors alike. Crowds are at their highest and prices peak, so book well ahead. For travellers who want real relief from the summer heat, world-class wind and a buzzing seaside town — and who embrace the alizés rather than fight them — August delivers.
