What Essaouira is like in September

September is one of Essaouira's finest months. Daytime highs around 23°C stay mild and bright, the strong summer winds begin to ease into a more comfortable steady breeze, and the peak-summer crowds start to thin. The blue-and-white medina, the Skala ramparts and the harbour feel relaxed again, the wide beach still has good wind for kitesurfing, and the clear late-summer light flatters the whole town from the painted boats to the rampart sunsets.

It is an excellent all-round month. With the wind softening from its July–August ferocity, conditions are a touch friendlier for time on the beach as well as superb for wind sports, and the medina, the working fishing port, the thuya-wood studios and the art galleries reward unhurried days. Long coastal walks, rampart sunsets and fresh grilled sardines at the harbour are all at their best, and the slightly gentler breeze makes September a sweet spot between summer's intensity and autumn's calm.

September keeps Essaouira's role as an easy, cool addition to an inland trip: as Marrakech eases out of peak heat, the two-and-a-half-hour drive still delivers a fresher, breezier coast. Prices and crowds soften from the August peak while the weather stays excellent. A windbreaker remains essential — this is Essaouira, after all — but with milder wind, bright days and a relaxed town, September is a standout choice.

    Good to know

    Essaouira in September: your questions

Is September a good time to visit Essaouira?+
Yes — September is among the best months. Mild, bright days around 23°C come as the strong summer winds ease and the peak crowds thin. Conditions are friendlier for beach time while still good for kitesurfing, and the relaxed medina and rampart sunsets shine. It remains a cool, breezy escape from inland Morocco.
How warm is Essaouira in September?+
Essaouira in September has daytime highs of around 23°C and night-time lows near 17°C — mild and bright, in the town's narrow year-round band. With the wind easing from its summer peak, it feels pleasantly warm yet still fresh. Days suit a windbreaker over light clothing; evenings stay cool.
Is it windy or rainy in Essaouira in September?+
September is dry, with only around 1–2 rainy days, and the trade winds begin easing from their fierce summer strength into a more comfortable steady breeze. A windbreaker is still essential — the Atlantic always blows — but the gentler wind makes beach time a little friendlier while staying good for wind sports.
What should I pack for Essaouira in September?+
Pack a windbreaker — essential in every month here — a light layer for cool evenings, comfortable walking shoes, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. For water sports the schools provide wetsuits, as the Atlantic water stays cool even with the easing wind and bright days.
