What Essaouira is like in April

April is a lovely month in Essaouira and the start of its real season. Daytime highs around 20°C are mild and bright, the days are long and clear, and the trade winds blow steadily — fresh and reliable rather than fierce. The town is lively again but not yet at the summer peak, the blue-and-white medina and the Skala ramparts are at their most photogenic under clean spring light, and the wide main beach hums with kitesurfers and windsurfers making the most of dependable wind.

It is an excellent month for an active, breezy coastal trip. The water-sports season is firmly underway — Essaouira's wide, shallow beach is among Morocco's best places to learn to kitesurf — while the medina, the working fishing port and the thuya-wood and art studios reward unhurried wandering. Beach-lounging is breezy, as ever here, but walks, rampart sunsets, fresh grilled sardines at the harbour and a steady, energising wind make April one of the most enjoyable times to be in town.

April also marks the start of Essaouira's role as a cool escape: as Marrakech warms, the coast's mild, breezy air becomes a deliberate contrast, and the easy two-and-a-half-hour drive makes a few days by the Atlantic a natural addition to an inland trip. A windbreaker is essential — the steady wind is the whole point of the place — and a light layer covers cool evenings. For wind, light, seafood and spring energy, April excels.

    Essaouira in April: your questions

Is April a good time to visit Essaouira?+
Yes — April is excellent and the start of the real season. Mild, bright days around 20°C, long clear light and steady trade winds make it ideal for wind sports and lively medina wandering, while staying gentler than the summer peak. It is also a cool, breezy escape from a warming Marrakech.
How warm is Essaouira in April?+
Essaouira in April has daytime highs of around 20°C and night-time lows near 13°C — mild and bright, in the town's narrow year-round band. The steady trade winds keep it feeling fresh, so it is cooler than inland Morocco. Days suit a windbreaker over light layers; evenings stay cool.
Is it windy or rainy in Essaouira in April?+
April is steadily windy — the trade winds blow fresh and reliable, which is exactly why kitesurfers love it — but they are not yet at their fiercest summer strength. Rain is light, with around 3 mostly-dry days. A windbreaker is essential; beach-lounging is breezy, but walks and water sports are superb.
What should I pack for Essaouira in April?+
Pack a windbreaker — essential in every season here — a light layer for cool evenings, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses and light sunscreen. For kitesurfing or windsurfing, the schools provide wetsuits, as the Atlantic water stays cool even as the air warms.
