What Merzouga is like in April

April is a superb month at Erg Chebbi and a high point of the desert season. Daytime highs settle around 29°C under dry, clear skies, the nights are mild rather than cold, and the great dunes are at their most rewarding. Camel trekking, dune walks, 4x4 trips and a night in a desert camp are all comfortable, and the warm spring light gives the sand a rich, golden glow. It is one of the most agreeable windows to experience the Sahara at Merzouga.

Good to know

Merzouga in April: your questions

Is April a good time to visit Merzouga?+
Yes — April is superb and a high point of the desert season. Warm, dry days around 29°C, clear skies and mild nights make it ideal for camel treks, dune walks and a night at a desert camp, with pleasant stargazing. It is prime season but never crowded, offering near-perfect Sahara conditions.
How hot is Merzouga in April?+
Merzouga in April has daytime highs of around 29°C and night-time lows near 13°C. Days are warm and bright but not yet harsh, ideal for full dune activities, while desert nights are mild. The big winter day-to-night swing has largely eased by April.
Is it rainy in Merzouga in April?+
No — April stays extremely dry, with around 1 rainy day at most and reliably clear skies. Rain is almost never a concern in the Sahara. You can plan camel treks, camp nights and 4x4 trips with very high confidence in settled, sunny weather.
What should I pack for Merzouga in April?+
Pack light, breathable daywear, a light layer for mild desert nights, a sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen and sunglasses, closed walking shoes plus sandals for the sand, a scarf for blowing sand and a refillable water bottle. Sun protection matters more than warm layers now.

  • It is ideal timing for the full classic experience. Sunset camel treks into the dunes, nights under canvas with comfortable temperatures, and sunrise over Erg Chebbi all come together beautifully, and the mild nights keep stargazing pleasant without the deep winter cold. The near-total dryness means clear skies are all but guaranteed, so desert itineraries run smoothly and the dunes are a genuine pleasure to explore across the day.

April sits in the heart of the prime season, so it draws more visitors than the quiet winter months, but the great expanse of Erg Chebbi never feels crowded. As the desert climax of a southern circuit — reached overland through the Dades and Draa valleys — it offers near-perfect conditions before the punishing summer heat arrives. For warm days, mild nights and the classic Sahara at its best, April is an outstanding choice.
