What Merzouga is like in March

March is one of the finest months at Erg Chebbi. Daytime highs reach a comfortable 25°C under dry, brilliant skies, the nights have softened to a manageable cool, and the great dunes are at their most rewarding. Camel trekking, dune walks, 4x4 trips and a night in a desert camp are all comfortable now, and the warm spring light brings out the deep gold of the sand. It sits in the heart of the prime Sahara season, with reliable, settled weather.

Good to know

Merzouga in March: your questions

Is March a good time to visit Merzouga?+
Yes — March is one of the best months. Warm, dry days around 25°C, clear skies and cooler-but-manageable nights make it excellent for camel treks, dune walks and a night at a desert camp, with great stargazing. Crowds stay modest before the spring peak, so it is near-ideal for the classic Sahara.
How hot is Merzouga in March?+
Merzouga in March has daytime highs of around 25°C and night-time lows near 9°C. Days are warm and comfortable for full dune activities under clear skies, while desert nights are cool rather than cold. The Sahara's day-to-night swing has eased considerably from midwinter.
Is it rainy in Merzouga in March?+
No — March stays extremely dry, with around 1 rainy day at most and warm, clear skies. Rain is almost never a concern in the desert. You can plan camel treks, camp nights and 4x4 trips with very high confidence in settled, sunny weather.
What should I pack for Merzouga in March?+

  • This is superb timing for the full Merzouga experience. Sunset camel treks into the dunes, nights under canvas, and sunrise over Erg Chebbi are all comfortable, while the still-cool nights keep the stargazing excellent. The near-total dryness means clear skies are all but guaranteed, so desert itineraries run smoothly, and the moderate temperatures make the dunes a pleasure to explore from morning to evening rather than a test of endurance.

March is ideal as the desert climax of a southern circuit, reached overland through the Dades and Draa valleys from Ouarzazate. The days are warm and comfortable, the nights cool rather than cold, and the crowds remain modest before the spring peak. For travellers chasing the classic Sahara — golden dunes, camel caravans, brilliant night skies — in warm, dry, reliable conditions, March is hard to beat.

    • The Marathon des Sables, a famous multi-day ultramarathon, is run somewhere in the southern Moroccan Sahara around spring — its route and dates vary each year and are not fixed to Merzouga, so treat it as a regional, not a local, event
    • Ramadan may fall in March in some years — dates shift ~11 days earlier annually, so confirm for your travel year
