Merzouga in October

October is one of the very best months at Erg Chebbi, opening the prime desert season in earnest. Daytime highs around 30°C are warm without the summer's danger, the nights cool to a comfortable, refreshing chill, and the great dunes are at their most rewarding. Camel trekking, dune walks, 4x4 trips and a night in a desert camp are all comfortable, and the warm autumn light gives the sand a deep golden glow under brilliant, clear skies.

This is superb timing for the full classic Merzouga experience. Sunset camel treks into the dunes, nights under canvas in pleasant temperatures, and sunrise over Erg Chebbi all come together beautifully, while the cool, clear nights deliver some of the year's finest stargazing — the Sahara's skies at their most spectacular. The near-total dryness means reliable conditions throughout, so desert itineraries run smoothly from arrival to departure.

October is ideal as the desert climax of a southern circuit, reached overland through the Dades and Draa valleys from Ouarzazate. The strong autumn demand means desert camps book up, so reserve ahead, but the great expanse of Erg Chebbi never feels crowded. For warm days, cool starlit nights and the classic Sahara at its absolute best, October is among the top months of the entire year to come.
