Essaouira in June

June is warm, dry and breezy in Essaouira — and famously cool for the time of year, exactly when inland Morocco starts to roast. Daytime highs hover around 22°C, the trade winds blow strong and steady, and the town buzzes with early-summer energy. The blue-and-white medina, the Skala ramparts and the harbour are lively, the wide beach is full of kitesurfers and windsurfers in prime conditions, and the constant Atlantic breeze keeps everything comfortable under bright, clear skies.

June is the month many travellers time deliberately for the Gnaoua World Music Festival, which typically falls in late June (dates vary). For a few days the whole town becomes a festival — international and Gnaoua artists, free concerts across the squares and ramparts, and a vibrant, crowded, unforgettable atmosphere. Accommodation books out far ahead for it, so reserve early if you want to attend. Outside the festival, June is simply a superb, breezy coastal month for wind sports, walks and harbour-side seafood.

June's real draw is the contrast it offers: as Marrakech climbs toward 33°C and beyond, Essaouira stays mild and wind-cooled, making the easy two-and-a-half-hour drive a deliberate escape from the inland heat. A windbreaker is essential — the strengthening wind is the whole point — with a light layer for cool evenings. For dependable wind, festival energy and genuine relief from the summer interior, June is an excellent time to be on the coast.
