Tipping (locally "pourboire") is customary but modest. Round up or leave about 10% in restaurants, a few dirhams for cafe waiters and porters, and 50–150 MAD per day for a good private guide or driver. Keep small notes and coins handy.
Tipping in Morocco is woven into daily life but stays modest — it is appreciation, not a fixed surcharge. In restaurants, leaving around 10% is generous and welcome; in casual cafes, simply rounding up or leaving a few dirhams of coins is normal. Some upmarket restaurants add a service charge, so glance at the bill before adding more.
For small services, a handful of dirhams goes a long way: 5–10 MAD for a cafe waiter, 10–20 MAD for a hotel porter carrying bags, a few dirhams for a parking attendant or restroom attendant, and similar for someone who genuinely helps you. These small notes and coins are worth keeping in an accessible pocket because cards are useless for this kind of thing.
Guides and drivers are where tipping matters most, because it is a meaningful part of how they are rewarded for good work. For a private local guide who has spent the day with you, roughly 100–150 MAD is a fair tip; for a full-day driver, around 50–100 MAD. On a multi-day private tour with the same driver-guide, many travellers prefer to give a single larger tip at the end rather than daily.
A couple of honest pointers: never feel pressured into tipping for unsolicited "help" pushed on you in the medina, and there is no obligation to tip if service was genuinely poor. Tip in dirhams rather than foreign currency, since locals cannot easily change small foreign notes. When in doubt, a warm thank-you with a modest, sincere tip is exactly right.
