No — Morocco is generally affordable by Western standards. Food, local transport and many riads cost a fraction of European prices. You can travel well on a modest budget, while luxury palace hotels and private guiding can still run high if you choose them.

By the standards of most Western travellers, Morocco is not expensive — it is one of the better-value destinations within easy reach of Europe and a manageable flight from North America. A hearty tagine in a local restaurant might cost $4–8, a mint tea a dollar or two, and a comfortable mid-range riad room often sits well below what you would pay for equivalent quality in Spain, France or Italy.

Where the value really shows is in the everyday things: fresh produce in the souk, street food, train tickets and shared taxis are all genuinely cheap. A second-class train between major cities can cost the equivalent of $10–20. Even private drivers, which feel like a luxury elsewhere, are relatively affordable here compared with Western Europe.

That said, Morocco can absolutely be expensive if you want it to be. The country has a serious high-end tier — palace hotels in Marrakech, luxury desert camps with private suites, fine dining and exclusive private guiding — that competes on price with luxury travel anywhere in the world. Imported goods, alcohol and international-brand hotels also cost noticeably more than local equivalents.

The practical takeaway: your daily spend is mostly a matter of choice rather than necessity. Mix local meals and trains with a few special splurges and Morocco feels remarkably good value. Go all-in on luxury everything and it can rival a high-end European trip. Most of our travellers land somewhere sensible in between.
