Less than French, but growing fast in tourism. In hotels, tour operators, and main tourist areas, you will find good English. Off the beaten path, French and Arabic dominate. A few words of French or Arabic, plus a translation app, smooth out any gaps.

Morocco's working languages are Arabic and French, with Berber (Amazigh) widely spoken too — English sits behind them. But here is the encouraging trend: among younger Moroccans and anyone working in tourism, English is rising quickly. In the parts of the country you are most likely to spend your time, communication is rarely a real barrier.

Inside the tourism bubble — riads, hotels, guides, tour operators, popular restaurants, and the main souks of Marrakech and Fes — you will find people who speak good, often excellent, English. Vendors used to international visitors switch languages effortlessly. For a standard tour-focused trip, you can get by comfortably on English alone.

Step off that track and the picture shifts. In small villages, local markets, rural taxis, and administrative settings, French is the lingua franca and Arabic the mother tongue, with English thinning out. This is where a translation app earns its place — I keep Google Translate with the offline French and Arabic packs downloaded for exactly these moments.

A handful of words transforms every interaction, regardless of fluency. "Salam" (hello), "shukran" (thank you), and "la, shukran" (no, thank you) in Arabic, or a little basic French, are met with genuine warmth and often a better price. You do not need to be a linguist; effort and a smile carry you everywhere in Morocco, and the gaps are easily bridged.
