It depends on your idea of relaxed. Essaouira is better for atmosphere, character, walkable medina charm and culture; Agadir is better for a warm, sheltered, swimmable beach and resort comfort. For a charming, low-key cultural escape choose Essaouira; for sun, sand and a proper beach holiday, choose Agadir. Many travellers love combining both.
These two Atlantic towns suit very different ideas of relaxation, so my honest answer is "it depends what relaxes you." Essaouira is a historic walled port with a whitewashed medina, art galleries, a working fishing harbour, sea ramparts and a bohemian, easygoing soul. Agadir, rebuilt after a 1960 earthquake, is a modern resort city with a long, sheltered, golden bay, big hotels, promenades and the warmest, calmest swimming on this coast. One is character and culture; the other is sun, sand and comfort.
If your version of relaxed means wandering atmospheric lanes, eating fresh fish at the harbour, browsing crafts, watching spectacular sunsets and soaking up a creative, unhurried vibe with little hassle, Essaouira wins comfortably. It is compact, walkable and full of personality, and it rewards slow, aimless days. The catch is the wind — Essaouira is famously breezy, and its ocean is cold and rough, so it is not a place to lie on the sand and swim. It relaxes the mind more than it suits a sun-lounger.
If your version of relaxed means a proper beach holiday — predictable sunshine, a wide sheltered bay where you can actually swim, sun-loungers, resort facilities, spas and an easy, undemanding rhythm — Agadir wins. It has the best beach weather on the coast, far more sheltered from the wind, more big-resort comfort, and a flat, easy promenade. The trade-off is that Agadir has little old-Morocco character; it is pleasant and sunny but not atmospheric, and culture-seekers can find it bland.
My honest guidance: for a charming, characterful, culturally rich low-key escape, choose Essaouira; for a sun-and-swim beach break with resort comforts, choose Agadir. They are only a few hours apart, so plenty of my guests do both — a couple of relaxed beach days in Agadir and a couple of atmospheric days in Essaouira — which honestly gives you the best of each. Match the choice to whether you want atmosphere or beach weather, and check seasonal conditions before you book.
