Marrakech Menara Airport is only about 15–20 minutes from the medina. Easiest options are a pre-arranged private transfer (no haggling, met on arrival), an official airport taxi, or the low-cost airport bus. For most travellers a booked transfer to the riad is the smoothest first arrival.
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) sits remarkably close to the city — roughly six kilometres out, which is about a 15–20 minute drive to the medina in normal traffic. That proximity means none of the options are slow; the differences are really about price, convenience and how much hassle you want on your first day in an unfamiliar place.
A pre-arranged private transfer is the smoothest choice, especially for a first arrival or a late-night landing. A driver meets you in the arrivals hall with your name, helps with bags and takes you directly to your riad — important because many riads are deep inside the medina where cars cannot reach, so you will often be walked the last stretch on foot. There is no negotiating and no surprises, which is exactly what you want after a flight.
Official airport taxis are readily available outside the terminal. They are a fine option, but fares to and from the airport are notorious for needing negotiation, and drivers do not always use the meter — so agree the price before you get in. There are official posted rates for airport runs; a daytime trip to the medina should be modest, with a fair surcharge at night. Insist on a clear price up front and you will avoid the most common arrival headache.
For the budget-minded, the airport bus (the L19 shuttle) runs between the airport and the central Jemaa el-Fnaa area for a very low fare, with departures every half hour or so. It is perfectly good if you are travelling light and your accommodation is near the centre. For most of our travellers, though, a booked transfer straight to the riad door is the relaxed way to start — and something we routinely arrange.
