April is peak desert season for good reason. Days around Merzouga run a warm 26–30°C with comfortable nights of roughly 11–15°C. Sleeping out is genuinely pleasant. Expect more visitors and busier camps — book ahead. Spring wind is possible but the conditions are superb.
April is high season in the Sahara, and once you have been here in April you understand why. The days are warm and generous — typically 26–30°C — without yet tipping into the punishing heat of summer. It is the kind of warmth where you genuinely want to be outside all day: scrambling the dunes barefoot, riding out to a far ridge, lazing on the sand after lunch. The desert feels welcoming rather than hostile.
The nights are the real luxury of April. Lows of around 11–15°C mean that, for the first time in the calendar, sleeping out under the open sky is a pleasure rather than an endurance test. Many of my April travellers skip the tent entirely and have their beds dragged onto the sand so they can fall asleep watching shooting stars. You still want a blanket in the small hours, but you are no longer fighting the cold.
The trade-off is people. April is busy — it is the most popular month out here, so the camps fill, the sunrise dune crest has other footprints on it, and the better places get booked out weeks ahead. This is not a month to leave to chance; if you want a good camp and a quiet stretch of erg, you reserve early. I always push my April travellers to lock things in well in advance.
There can still be the odd windy, hazy spring day, so keep a face scarf handy, but the overwhelming character of April is warm, easy and beautiful. If you can only travel in spring and you do not mind sharing the desert with a few more people, April delivers the most reliably comfortable conditions of the year. Light clothing for the day, a light layer for the night, and you will want for nothing.
