October is one of the very best months for the Sahara. Days around Merzouga sit at a near-perfect 27–31°C, with comfortable nights of roughly 14–18°C. Warm, clear and stable, with sleeping out a pleasure. It is peak autumn season, so book your camp well ahead.

October is, for my money, the single finest month to meet the Sahara — the autumn mirror image of April, and arguably even better. The fierce summer is fully gone, the conditions are warm and stable, and everything that makes the desert magical is dialled in. Daytime highs of 27–31°C mean you can be out on the dunes all day in comfort, walking the ridges, riding the camels, sitting on the warm sand long after the sun has gone down.

The nights are the gift of October: lows of around 14–18°C are warm enough that sleeping out under the open sky is pure pleasure, yet cool enough for a deep, restful sleep wrapped in a blanket. The air is settling back toward its dry autumn clarity, so the stars sharpen up again and the evening fire feels just right rather than too hot or too cold. It is the desert at its most generous.

Because the conditions are so good, October is firmly peak season again. The camps fill up, the popular sunrise spots have company, and the best places get reserved a long way out. This is not a month for last-minute plans — if you want a quality camp and a quiet patch of erg, you commit early. I push all my October travellers to lock in their dates well ahead, because the good options genuinely do sell out.

Packing for October is easy and forgiving: light, breathable clothing for the warm days, a proper layer and something for your head for the cooler evenings, and reliable sun protection. With clear skies, warm days, comfortable nights and that beautiful autumn light, October consistently sends my travellers home with the version of the Sahara they dreamed about. If you can choose any month, this is the one I quietly recommend first.
