Pure driving time is 8–9 hours over roughly 560 km, but nobody sensible does it in one go. With the Tizi n’Tichka pass, photo stops at Ait Ben Haddou and the gorges, and a night near Ouarzazate or Dades, realistic door-to-camp time is two days.

On paper it is 8 to 9 hours and about 560 km. In reality, plan two days. The road is mountainous and winding for the first third — the Tizi n’Tichka pass alone slows you to 40 km/h through endless switchbacks — so you never average highway speeds. I have driven it hundreds of times, and a non-stop blast still takes the better part of a working day.

What eats the clock, in a good way, is the scenery. You physically cannot resist stopping: the viewpoint at the top of the pass, the kasbah at Ait Ben Haddou, the cedar and walnut stalls, lunch in Ouarzazate, the Dades and Todra gorges with their towering rock walls. Each stop is 20 to 60 minutes, and they are the reason to come this way rather than fly.

My standard split is Marrakech to the Dades or Todra area on day one (about 5–6 hours of driving plus stops), then Dades to Merzouga on day two (around 3–4 hours), arriving in time for the late-afternoon camel ride. That rhythm keeps the daily drive humane and means you reach the dunes fresh rather than wrecked.

If your schedule is tight and you genuinely must compress it, a single very long day is possible with an early start and a private driver — but I rarely recommend it. You arrive at the camp after dark, sore and frazzled, and you have raced past the best parts of southern Morocco. The drive is the experience here, not just the means to it.
