The most beautiful places in Morocco: the blue lanes of Chefchaouen, the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunrise, Ait Benhaddou at golden hour, the Bahia Palace and Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech, Todra Gorge, Essaouira’s harbour, the Fes medina’s medersas, and the Atlas villages above Imlil. Each is beautiful in a completely different register.

Chefchaouen is the place people picture, and for once it lives up to the photos. The whole old town is washed in shades of blue, from powder to indigo, and the beauty is in the small things — a cat asleep on a blue step, pots of red geraniums against the wall, an old door framed by climbing vines. I tell people to come early, before the day-trippers, and just wander upward until the streets give way to views over the Rif mountains.

In the south, the beauty is elemental. The Erg Chebbi dunes at first light, Ait Benhaddou glowing at golden hour as you cross the river toward the ksar, and Todra Gorge with its towering red walls — these are landscapes that make you go quiet. They are beautiful in a way that has nothing to do with prettiness and everything to do with scale and light, and they photograph like another planet.

The cities hold a more crafted, ornamental beauty. In Marrakech, the Bahia Palace with its painted cedar ceilings and tiled courtyards, and the cobalt-and-cactus calm of the Jardin Majorelle, are exquisite. In Fes, the medersas — Bou Inania and Al-Attarine — are masterpieces of zellij tilework, carved stucco and cedar, the kind of detail you can stare at for an hour. This is beauty made by human hands over centuries.

And then the coast and mountains soften everything. Essaouira’s blue fishing boats and ramparts against the Atlantic, the green terraced valleys and snow-tipped peaks of the High Atlas above Imlil, the walnut groves and red-earth villages — these are beautiful in a calm, lived-in way. The honest answer is that Morocco’s beauty refuses a single style: blue town, golden desert, ornate palace, wild coast. That range is exactly why it stays with you.
