Can you see Spain from Tangier?

The short answer
Our team's answerYes, on a clear day. At its narrowest the Strait of Gibraltar separates Morocco and Spain by about 14 km, and from Tangier's cliff-top viewpoints, such as Café Hafa and the Kasbah, the Spanish coast around Tarifa is often visible across the water. Haze, cloud and sea mist hide it on many days, so it is never guaranteed.

Question
The full answer
A common question when planning a trip to Morocco, answered honestly by our travel designers.
Tangier sits on the African side of the Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow channel that joins the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and separates Africa from Europe. At its narrowest point the two continents are only about 14 km apart, which is why the question comes up so often: on the right day, Spain really is in plain sight.
The best places to look are high up and facing north. Café Hafa, the terraced café on the cliffs west of the Kasbah, looks straight across the Strait, and the Spanish coast around Tarifa can be seen in the distance from its terraces. The Kasbah itself, the old citadel on the highest ground of the medina, has viewpoints over the port and the water, and the Kasbah Museum stands on one of the highest points overlooking the Strait. Further west, the headland of Cap Spartel looks out where the Atlantic meets the Strait.
Whether you see anything depends on the weather. The Strait is often hazy, especially in the heat of summer, and low cloud or sea mist can hide the far shore completely. Clear, dry days after wind or rain tend to give the sharpest views, and the light is often better in the morning or the late afternoon than at midday. If the view matters to you, look on more than one day of your stay rather than relying on a single visit.
Seeing Spain is one thing; crossing to it is another, and many travellers do it. Ferries run across the Strait every day, between the ports around Tangier and the Spanish coast at Tarifa and Algeciras, and the crossing is short. That makes Tangier a natural gateway for travellers combining Andalusia and northern Morocco. Check routes, schedules and passport requirements with the ferry companies before you plan a day across.
If you only have one day in Tangier, combine the view with a walk through the medina and the Kasbah, ending at Café Hafa for mint tea on the terraces looking north. On a clear afternoon, watching the ships move through the Strait with Europe on the horizon is a memorable way to end a day in the city.

Tangier, Chefchaouen and the blue north
Tangier’s kasbah, Asilah on the Atlantic and the blue lanes of Chefchaouen in the Rif: the north is easiest with a private driver-guide between them.
