A licensed local city guide costs 300–600 MAD ($30–60) for a half or full day in Marrakech or Fes. National multi-day guides who travel with you run 700–1,500 MAD ($70–150) per day. Always confirm whether the rate is per person or per group, and tip 10–20%.
Hiring a licensed guide for a day in a city like Fes or Marrakech is one of the best small investments you can make — the medinas are labyrinths, and a good guide turns a stressful maze into a story. The going rate for a licensed city guide is about 300–600 MAD ($30–60) for a half to full day, for your group, not per person. That covers their time and knowledge; entry tickets, taxis, and lunch are extra.
Make sure your guide is officially licensed — they carry a badge issued by the Ministry of Tourism. Licensed guides are trained, accountable, and far less likely to steer you into shops for commission than the unofficial ‘faux guides’ who attach themselves to tourists at the gates. If someone offers to guide you for 100 MAD, that’s the tell-tale sign of an unlicensed hustle, and it often ends at a carpet shop.
For a multi-day trip where a guide travels with you across regions — escorting you from Marrakech over the Atlas to the desert and on to Fes — expect 700–1,500 MAD ($70–150) per day, and on a fully escorted private tour the guide’s cost is usually folded into the package price along with the driver and vehicle. A combined driver-guide for the road is excellent value and means one person handles logistics, language, and context.
Two honest points on tipping and clarity. First, always confirm at booking whether the quoted figure is per group or per person, and what’s included — this single question prevents almost every misunderstanding. Second, guides rely on tips: 10–20% of the day rate (roughly 50–150 MAD) for a city guide, more if they’ve gone above and beyond, is fair and appreciated.
