Overview

2 days, Ouarzazate to Skoura

Ouarzazate, the "door of the desert," is Morocco's cinema capital and the gateway to its greatest kasbahs. Home to Atlas Film Studios — the largest film studios in the world by area — and ringed by earthen fortresses, it has doubled for Rome, Egypt and Westeros on screen. This 2-day itinerary covers the Taourirt Kasbah, the studios and Fint Oasis, then the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Benhaddou and the palm-shaded Skoura oasis.

Suitability

Is this 2-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around an unhurried, relaxed rhythm — long mornings, time to linger over mint tea and few box-ticking days. Days are gentle with little strenuous walking, so it suits most travellers, including families and first-time visitors to Morocco. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 2 days and want to see Ouarzazate, Aït Benhaddou, Skoura
  • You want a route shaped by people who run it on the ground, not a generic template
  • You prefer comfort over roughing it — riads, hotels and a private vehicle throughout

Why private

Why book this as a private tour?

On a group coach you follow the crowd's clock. On a private Serenity itinerary the day bends to you: a slower morning in the medina, an extra hour at a viewpoint, dinner moved earlier for the kids. You travel with your own licensed driver-guide and air-conditioned vehicle, sleep in hand-picked riads rather than chain hotels, and skip the daily wait for 30 strangers to reboard the bus.

01

Day 1: Taourirt Kasbah, Atlas Film Studios & Fint Oasis

Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate, nicknamed the "door of the desert," is Morocco's cinema capital — the world's largest film studio by area sits on its edge. Begin at the grand Taourirt Kasbah, a 19th-century Glaoui stronghold of pisé towers and decorated reception rooms, then go behind the scenes at Atlas Film Studios, where Gladiator, Cleopatra and Kundun sets still stand. End the day at the hidden Fint Oasis, a green ribbon of palms and Berber villages cradled by black volcanic hills just south of town.

2 hours

02

Day 2: UNESCO Aït Benhaddou & the Skoura Palmeraie

Aït Benhaddou · 150 km · 2.5-3 hours total drive

Devote the morning to Aït Benhaddou, the earthen ksar inscribed by UNESCO in 1987 and arguably Morocco's most photogenic fortified village. Cross the Ounila river, climb its tiered red-clay houses and stand on the old granary for sweeping desert views. In the afternoon, head east into the Skoura oasis — a sea of date palms guarding the 17th-century Kasbah Amridil, so iconic it features on the 50-dirham banknote. Time permitting, push on toward the rose-growing Valley of Roses.

Morning

2.5 hours

Aït Benhaddou Ksar

Drive ~30km west to Aït Benhaddou. With a local guide, cross to the ksar and climb through its honey-coloured kasbahs to the hilltop agadir (granary) for panoramic Atlas and desert views. A film backdrop for Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones.

Afternoon

3 hours

Skoura Oasis & Kasbah Amridil

Return east through Ouarzazate to the Skoura palmeraie (~40km), threading thousands of date palms. Tour the 17th-century Kasbah Amridil — pictured on the 50-dirham note — to see traditional Berber rural life, oil presses and granaries.

Evening

1.5 hours

As the day cools, the kasbah walls along the Dades road glow rose and ochre. Pause for photographs along the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs before returning to Ouarzazate for dinner, or continue onward to your next stop.

2-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

Why is Ouarzazate called the Hollywood of Africa?

Ouarzazate is home to Atlas Film Studios (founded 1983), the largest film studios in the world by surface area, plus CLA Studios. Its desert light and kasbah scenery have stood in for ancient Rome, Egypt, Tibet and Westeros in hundreds of films and series.

How far is Aït Benhaddou from Ouarzazate?

Aït Benhaddou is about 30km northwest of Ouarzazate, roughly a 35–40 minute drive. It makes an easy half-day trip and is the highlight of any Ouarzazate visit.

What movies were filmed in Ouarzazate?

Productions shot in and around Ouarzazate include Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy, Kingdom of Heaven, Kundun, Babel, Prison Break and Game of Thrones, with many standing sets still visible at Atlas Studios and Aït Benhaddou.

Is 2 days enough for Ouarzazate?

Two days comfortably covers the Taourirt Kasbah, Atlas Film Studios, Fint Oasis, UNESCO Aït Benhaddou and the Skoura oasis. With more time you can add the Valley of Roses, the Dades and Todra gorges or continue to the Sahara.

What is Taourirt Kasbah?

Taourirt Kasbah is a 19th-century earthen fortress on the edge of Ouarzazate, once a residence of the powerful Glaoui family. Its maze of rooms, carved ceilings and rooftop terraces are among the best-preserved in southern Morocco.

Can you visit Atlas Film Studios?

Yes. Atlas Corporation Studios offers guided tours among its standing sets, including Egyptian temples, Roman arenas and Tibetan palaces. The nearby CLA Studios can also be visited. Tours take around 1–1.5 hours.

What is the Fint Oasis?

Fint Oasis is a hidden green valley about 10km south of Ouarzazate, where palm groves and mud-brick Berber villages sit among black volcanic hills. It is a peaceful spot for a short walk, a meal with a local family or sunset photography.

What is Kasbah Amridil in Skoura?

Kasbah Amridil is a 17th-century fortified residence in the Skoura palmeraie, about 40km east of Ouarzazate. It is one of Morocco's most famous kasbahs and appears on the 50-dirham banknote; inside you can see granaries, oil presses and traditional Berber life.

When is the best time to visit Ouarzazate?

Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) offer the most comfortable temperatures. Summer days are very hot and winter nights can be cold, though winter daytime sunshine is excellent for photography.

How do you get to Ouarzazate?

Ouarzazate is about a 4-hour drive from Marrakech over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m). It also has its own small airport (OZZ) with limited domestic flights, and it is a common stop on Sahara desert tours.

Insider tips

Before you go

  • Ouarzazate is the "gateway to the Sahara" and a natural base for kasbah country and the Draa Valley
  • Summer days are very hot and winter nights cold — spring and autumn are most comfortable
  • Both Atlas Studios and CLA Studios offer tours; standing sets are open-air, so bring sun protection
  • Aït Benhaddou is best photographed in early morning or late-afternoon light
  • Carry small dirham notes for kasbah entries, local guides and parking
  • A private car or driver makes the Aït Benhaddou + Skoura loop far easier than public transport
  • Many travellers pair Ouarzazate with a Sahara trip to Merzouga or Zagora rather than as a sole destination

Packing list

What to pack
