The Airport Guide

Morocco Airports Guide

Which airport to fly into for your destination — a practical guide to Morocco's major airports, the airlines that serve them, and how to reach your riad.

Plan Your ArrivalView All Airports
Arrival Planning

Choosing the Right Airport

Morocco has several international airports scattered across the country, but choosing the right one can save you hours of overland travel and significantly improve your first day. The two dominant gateways are Marrakech Menara (RAK) for southern Morocco and Mohammed V in Casablanca (CMN) for onward rail connections anywhere in the country.

Beyond these two, regional airports at Fes (FEZ), Agadir (AGA), and Tangier (TNG) offer direct European flights that can put you much closer to your actual destination. Smaller airports at Essaouira, Ouarzazate, and Dakhla serve niche routes but have limited schedules.

The decision often comes down to a simple question: where do you want to spend your first night? Fly into the airport closest to that answer, and you will start your trip refreshed rather than exhausted from a long transfer.

Major Gateways

Marrakech (RAK) and Casablanca (CMN) handle the majority of international arrivals with the widest airline and route selection.

Regional Airports

Fes, Agadir, and Tangier offer direct European connections that can eliminate hours of overland travel to your destination.

Rail Connection

Only Casablanca (CMN) has a direct airport-to-city train link. All other airports require taxi or bus transfers.

Smaller Fields

Essaouira, Ouarzazate, and Dakhla have airports with very limited service. Most travelers use road connections instead.

Airports

Morocco's Major Airports

Detailed profiles of every airport you might fly into, with the information that actually matters: what destinations each one serves, which airlines operate there, and how to get from the terminal to your hotel.

Primary International Gateway
RAK

Marrakech Menara Airport

RAK

5km southwest of city center

Morocco's second-busiest airport and the primary gateway for travelers heading to southern Morocco. Marrakech Menara handles a high volume of European low-cost carriers alongside full-service airlines, making it the most affordable entry point for many visitors. The airport has two terminals and is well equipped with ATMs, car rental desks, and a Maroc Telecom booth for SIM cards.

Best For Reaching

  • Marrakech medina and Gueliz
  • Atlas Mountains day trips
  • Essaouira (3-hour drive)
  • Agadir (2.5-hour drive via autoroute)
  • Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou (3.5 hours)
  • Starting point for multi-day Sahara circuits

Transfer Options

  • Petit taxi: 80-120 MAD to medina, negotiate before entering
  • Bus 19: Runs to Jemaa el-Fnaa, affordable but infrequent
  • Private transfer: Pre-arranged with hotel or tour operator
  • Rental car: Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and local agencies at arrivals
Airlines: Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair, easyJet, Transavia, Vueling, Air Arabia, British Airways, Lufthansa, TUI
Transfer time: 15-20 minutes to medina

No direct rail link to the airport. The train station is in the city center (Marrakech Gare). Taxi or bus required to reach it.

Primary International Gateway
CMN

Mohammed V International Airport, Casablanca

CMN

35km southeast of Casablanca city center

Morocco's busiest and best-connected airport, serving as the hub for Royal Air Maroc. If you cannot find a direct flight to your Moroccan destination, you will almost certainly find a connection through CMN. The airport has two terminals, extensive duty-free shopping, lounges, and the significant advantage of a direct ONCF train link to the city center and onward to other Moroccan cities.

Best For Reaching

  • Casablanca itself
  • Rabat (40 minutes by direct train)
  • Fes (4 hours by train via Rabat and Meknes)
  • Nationwide rail connections
  • Long-haul arrivals from North America, Gulf, and Asia

Transfer Options

  • ONCF train: Direct to Casa Voyageurs and Casa Port stations, 35-40 minutes. The clear winner for most travelers.
  • Taxi: Fixed fare to Casablanca center. More expensive than train but door-to-door.
  • Rental car: Full range of international and local agencies in arrivals hall.
Airlines: Royal Air Maroc (hub), Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air France, Iberia, TAP Portugal, Turkish Airlines, Delta, United, Lufthansa, British Airways
Transfer time: 35-40 minutes to city center by train, 45-60 by taxi depending on traffic

The airport train station is directly connected to Terminal 1. Trains run frequently to Casablanca city and connect to Rabat, Marrakech, Fes, Tangier, and Meknes.

AGA

Agadir Al Massira Airport

AGA

25km east of Agadir city center

The main gateway to Morocco's southern Atlantic coast and the Souss-Massa region. Agadir airport receives a high proportion of charter and package-holiday flights from Europe, particularly from the UK, France, and Germany. The airport is modern and efficient, though smaller than Marrakech or Casablanca.

Best For Reaching

  • Agadir beach and resort area
  • Souss Valley and Taroudant
  • Taghazout surf town (30 minutes north)
  • Anti-Atlas region and Tiznit
  • Connecting flights to Dakhla

Transfer Options

  • Petit taxi: 100-150 MAD to Agadir center, negotiate fare
  • Hotel shuttle: Many beach resorts offer airport pickup
  • Rental car: Recommended if heading to Anti-Atlas or Taghazout
Airlines: Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair, TUI, Jet2, Transavia, Condor
Transfer time: 25-35 minutes to Agadir center

No rail service to Agadir. All onward travel is by road.

FEZ

Fes-Sais Airport

FEZ

12km south of Fes city center

A compact but well-served airport that provides direct access to Morocco's spiritual and cultural capital. Fes-Sais has seen significant growth in low-cost carrier routes from Europe, making it an excellent choice for travelers focused on northern Morocco. The airport is small enough that navigation is straightforward, but it can feel crowded when multiple flights arrive simultaneously.

Best For Reaching

  • Fes medina and Ville Nouvelle
  • Volubilis Roman ruins (1 hour)
  • Meknes (45 minutes)
  • Ifrane and Middle Atlas cedar forests
  • Northern approach to the Sahara (via Midelt and Errachidia)

Transfer Options

  • Grand taxi: Shared grand taxis to the city, roughly 20 MAD per person. Wait until the taxi fills (6 passengers).
  • Private taxi: Negotiate whole-taxi fare (120-150 MAD) if you do not want to wait for a shared ride.
  • Pre-arranged transfer: Riads and hotels commonly arrange airport pickup.
Airlines: Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair, easyJet, Transavia, Air Arabia, Wizz Air
Transfer time: 20-30 minutes to the medina area

Fes train station (Gare de Fes) is in the Ville Nouvelle. No direct airport rail link.

TNG

Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport

TNG

12km southwest of Tangier city center

The northern gateway to Morocco, increasingly well connected with European budget carriers. Tangier airport benefits from the city's proximity to the Tangier Med port and the Al Boraq TGV high-speed rail line, which connects Tangier to Casablanca in roughly two hours. This makes Tangier a viable arrival point for travelers heading south by train.

Best For Reaching

  • Tangier city and kasbah
  • Tetouan (1 hour by road)
  • Chefchaouen (2.5 hours by road)
  • Rif Mountains exploration
  • Onward TGV connection to Rabat and Casablanca

Transfer Options

  • Petit taxi: To Tangier city center or medina
  • Grand taxi: Shared service available from outside the terminal
  • Rental car: Useful if heading to Chefchaouen or Tetouan directly
Airlines: Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair, Iberia, Air Arabia, Vueling
Transfer time: 15-25 minutes to Tangier center

Tangier Ville train station connects to the Al Boraq TGV network. Casablanca is reachable in approximately 2 hours 10 minutes by high-speed train.

ESU

Essaouira Mogador Airport

ESU

15km south of Essaouira medina

A very small airport with extremely limited service. Ryanair operates seasonal flights from a handful of European cities, but schedules are sparse and seasonal. For most travelers, flying into Marrakech and driving or taking a bus to Essaouira (roughly 3 hours) remains the practical choice.

Best For Reaching

  • Essaouira medina and beach

Transfer Options

  • Taxi: Small number of taxis available at arrivals
  • Pre-arranged transfer: Recommended given limited taxi availability
Airlines: Ryanair (seasonal, very limited schedule)
Transfer time: 15-20 minutes to Essaouira medina

Most visitors reach Essaouira by driving or taking a Supratours bus from Marrakech (approximately 3 hours). Do not rely on this airport for regular access.

OZZ

Ouarzazate Airport

OZZ

1km north of Ouarzazate town center

A small airport that primarily serves domestic connections via Royal Air Maroc through Casablanca. Ouarzazate is the gateway to the Draa Valley, Ait Benhaddou, and the eastern approach to the Sahara. The airport occasionally sees charter traffic related to film productions at the nearby Atlas Studios.

Best For Reaching

  • Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou
  • Draa Valley and Zagora
  • Eastern Sahara approach via Tinghir and Merzouga
  • Valley of the Roses (Kelaat M'Gouna)

Transfer Options

  • Taxi: Short ride to town center
  • Rental car: Recommended for onward desert driving
Airlines: Royal Air Maroc (connections via Casablanca)
Transfer time: 5-10 minutes to town center

Limited flight availability. Most travelers reach Ouarzazate by road from Marrakech (approximately 4 hours via the Tizi n'Tichka pass).

VIL

Dakhla Airport

VIL

5km from Dakhla town center

A remote airport serving the growing kitesurfing and windsurfing destination of Dakhla on Morocco's far southern Atlantic coast. Dakhla is a long way from anywhere else in Morocco by road, so flying is the practical choice for most visitors.

Best For Reaching

  • Dakhla kitesurfing and windsurfing
  • Dakhla lagoon and desert experiences

Transfer Options

  • Taxi: Available from the terminal
  • Hotel transfer: Most kitesurf camps arrange pickup
Airlines: Royal Air Maroc (from Casablanca, occasionally Agadir)
Transfer time: 10-15 minutes to town center

Dakhla is roughly 1,700km south of Casablanca by road. Flying is strongly recommended unless you are on an overland adventure.

Practical Advice

Arriving in Morocco

Your first thirty minutes in any country set the tone for the trip. These tips will help you navigate the airport smoothly and avoid common pitfalls.

Get a SIM Card Immediately

Look for the Maroc Telecom, Inwi, or Orange booth in the arrivals hall. A prepaid SIM with data costs roughly 30-50 MAD and gives you maps, translation, and communication from the moment you leave the airport. Maroc Telecom has the widest rural coverage.

Use ATMs, Not Exchange Kiosks

ATMs are available at all major airports and dispense Moroccan dirhams at competitive interbank rates. Airport currency exchange kiosks typically offer poor rates with high commissions. Withdraw enough cash for your first taxi and a day of spending.

Settle Your Taxi Fare Before Getting In

Agree on the fare before entering the taxi, or insist on the meter if one exists. Better yet, arrange a private transfer through your accommodation or tour operator. This eliminates negotiation stress after a long flight.

Stay Calm in the Arrivals Hall

Moroccan airport arrivals can feel chaotic, especially at Marrakech. Unofficial "helpers" may approach you offering taxis or hotel bookings. Politely decline, follow signs to the official taxi rank, and do not hand your luggage to strangers.

Baggage Porters and Trolleys

At larger airports, porters may offer to carry your bags. If you accept, a tip of 10-20 MAD is customary. Trolleys are available in the baggage claim area, sometimes for a small coin deposit.

Allow Time for Immigration

Immigration queues can be lengthy, particularly when several flights arrive at once. Fill out the entry card on the plane to save time. Have your passport, return flight details, and accommodation address ready.

Onward Travel

Getting From the Airport to Your Destination

Once you have landed, Morocco offers several ways to reach your final destination. The right choice depends on where you are going, your budget, and how many people are in your group.

Train (CMN Only)

Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca is the only Moroccan airport with a direct ONCF rail link. Trains run frequently to Casablanca city, with onward connections to Rabat, Marrakech, Fes, Meknes, and Tangier. This makes CMN the most versatile arrival airport for rail travelers.

Private Transfer

The most comfortable option, especially after a long flight. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and handles everything. We arrange airport transfers for all our guests as part of the tour package or as a standalone service.

Taxi or Shared Ride

Petit taxis and grand taxis are available at all airports. Petit taxis serve city rides; grand taxis handle longer routes and can be shared. Always agree on the fare before departure, or insist on the meter where available.

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is the best choice, located just 5km from the city center with a 15-20 minute taxi ride to the medina. It is served by numerous European low-cost carriers as well as full-service airlines.

What is the best airport for reaching the Sahara Desert?

Both Marrakech (RAK) and Fes (FEZ) serve as starting points for Sahara trips. RAK is the typical start for the southern circuit via Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley to Merzouga. FEZ offers a more direct eastern approach through Midelt and Errachidia.

Does Casablanca airport have a train connection?

Yes. Mohammed V Airport (CMN) has a direct ONCF train link to Casablanca city center (35-40 minutes) with onward connections to Rabat, Marrakech, Fes, Tangier, and other cities on the national rail network.

How do I get from the airport to Chefchaouen?

The closest airports to Chefchaouen are Tangier (TNG) at 2.5 hours by road and Fes (FEZ) at roughly 4 hours by road. Tangier is the closer and more common choice. There is no airport in Chefchaouen itself.
