The High Atlas is cool and seasonal. Winter (Dec–Mar) brings snow and sub-zero nights at altitude; Toubkal and the high passes get deep snow. Summer (Jun–Aug) is pleasantly cool, 20–28°C in the valleys — a welcome escape from the lowland heat. Spring and autumn are mild and green.

The Atlas is a different climate world from the plains below, and that's exactly its appeal. Because villages like Imlil sit at 1,700m and the peaks rise above 4,000m, temperatures drop roughly 6°C for every 1,000m you climb. So while Marrakech roasts at 40°C in July, the valley two hours away can be a fresh 25°C — Moroccans have escaped to the mountains to cool off for centuries.

Winter (December to March) is the snow season. The high passes — Tizi n'Tichka, Tizi n'Test — and the slopes around Toubkal get real snowfall, and Oukaïmeden actually operates as a ski resort. Valley villages see daytime temperatures of 5–12°C and nights that drop below freezing; up high, summit attempts need crampons, an ice axe and a guide. Roads over the passes can close briefly after heavy snow, so winter mountain travel needs flexibility.

Summer (June to August) is glorious up here. Valley days run 20–28°C with cool, clear nights perfect for sleeping — it genuinely feels like air-conditioning compared to the desert and the city. This is prime trekking season for Toubkal, when the snow has melted off the trails and the high passes are open. Even then, mountain nights are cool, so a warm layer earns its place in your bag.

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are beautiful in-between seasons: green valleys, blossoming or harvest-laden almond and walnut terraces, mild 18–24°C days and crisp nights. My rule for the Atlas is simple — whatever the lowland forecast says, add a warm layer and a waterproof, because mountain weather turns faster and colder than the city ever does.
