Inland Morocco gets very hot in summer: Marrakech 38–45°C, the Sahara 40–47°C, Fes similar. To escape, head to the Atlantic coast (Essaouira 18–24°C, Agadir 22–28°C) or up into the Atlas Mountains (20–28°C in the valleys). Coast and mountains stay 15–20°C cooler.
Summer heat in inland Morocco is no joke. From June through August, Marrakech sits in the high 30s and regularly pushes past 40°C, with heatwave spikes to 45°C+. Fes and Meknes run similarly hot, and the Sahara around Merzouga and Zagora bakes at 40–47°C in the early afternoon. It's dry heat rather than sticky, which helps, but a 44°C medina at 2pm will floor anyone not prepared.
The good news is that Morocco gives you two natural air-conditioners, and both are within easy reach of the imperial cities. The first is the Atlantic coast: the cold ocean current keeps Essaouira at a breezy 18–24°C and Agadir around 22–28°C all summer. Driving from Marrakech to Essaouira in July can mean a 20°C drop in three hours — people genuinely arrive in disbelief reaching for a jacket.
The second escape is altitude. The High Atlas valleys around Imlil and Ouirgane sit at 1,500–1,800m and stay a fresh 20–28°C in summer with cool nights for sleeping. Moroccans have summered in the mountains for generations precisely for this. Higher up it's cooler still, and the trekking season is in full swing once the snow has gone. Chefchaouen and the Rif up north are also milder than the southern plains.
So if you're locked into a summer trip, I build the itinerary around the heat rather than fighting it: see the cities and desert in early morning and evening, then base the middle of the trip on the coast or in the mountains. Pair Marrakech with Essaouira, or the desert with an Atlas valley stay, and you get Morocco's full range without melting. Either way, hydrate relentlessly, wear loose light clothing and a hat, and respect the midday sun.
