For pure relaxation, yes — Essaouira is the calmer, breezier, gentler choice. Pick Essaouira if you want sea air, a walkable medina with no hassle, fresh seafood and a slow pace. Pick Marrakech if "chilled" still means buzz, rooftops and shopping nearby. Ideally pair them: Marrakech first, then unwind in Essaouira.
If "chilled" is the operative word, then yes — Essaouira beats Marrakech for a relaxed few days, and it's not especially close. The two are only a few hours apart but feel like different countries in temperament. Marrakech is thrilling and intense; Essaouira is breezy, low-key and slow. So the honest answer turns on what you mean by chilled, because for some travellers a buzzy rooftop and a souk crawl *is* relaxation, while for others it's the opposite.
Choose Essaouira for genuine downtime. It's a windswept Atlantic port with a compact, whitewashed-and-blue medina that's a UNESCO site yet refreshingly hassle-free — the vendors are relaxed, you can actually stroll without being hustled, and you're never far from the ramparts and the sea. The pace is gentle: long seafood lunches straight off the boats, walks on the wide beach, watching the fishing fleet, browsing artisan and art shops, and a cool ocean breeze that's a blessed relief from inland heat. It's also a hub for kitesurfing and windsurfing if your idea of chilled includes a bit of wind-powered fun.
Choose Marrakech if your version of unwinding still wants energy on tap. Even at a leisurely pace, Marrakech offers serene riad courtyards, gorgeous gardens like the Majorelle, lavish spas and hammams, and superb rooftop dining — you can absolutely have a relaxed few days here, dipping into the buzz when you want it and retreating to a pool when you don't. The honest caveat is that the medina's intensity and the summer heat are always just outside the riad door, so true switch-off takes more deliberate effort than it does by the sea in Essaouira.
So my decision rule: if you want to genuinely decompress — sea air, no hassle, slow food, gentle days — Essaouira is the better chilled base, and it's my go-to recommendation for the relaxing tail end of a trip. If you'd be bored without a city's energy nearby, stay in Marrakech and build relaxation in deliberately. Best of all, you don't have to choose: the classic move is a few intense, exhilarating days in Marrakech followed by a few restorative ones in Essaouira, which gives a first trip a perfect rhythm of buzz then breath.
