Give Fes the lion’s share — its vast medieval medina is one of the world’s great cities and rewards two or three days. Meknes is handsome and far quieter, but a half-day or one night covers it well, ideally paired with nearby Volubilis. Fes for depth and atmosphere; Meknes for an easy, crowd-free imperial taste.

If your time is limited, I'll be straight with you: Fes deserves far more of it than Meknes. Fes el-Bali is the most complete medieval city in the Arab world — a labyrinth of thousands of lanes, working tanneries, centuries-old madrasas, the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque-university, and an artisan culture that's still genuinely alive rather than staged. It's overwhelming, intoxicating and inexhaustible; I send people in for two or three days and they still feel they've only scratched it. Nowhere else in Morocco matches its density of history and atmosphere.

Meknes, just under an hour away, is the underrated imperial city — and I have real affection for it. Its monumental gate, Bab Mansour, is arguably the finest in Morocco; the colossal granaries and stables of Moulay Ismail's royal complex are extraordinary; and the medina is relaxed, walkable and almost free of the hassle that wears people down in busier cities. The catch is simply scale and intensity: Meknes is smaller and quieter, and you can take in its highlights comfortably in half a day or a single overnight.

Where Meknes earns extra time is its surroundings rather than the city itself. It's the natural base for the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy hilltop town of Moulay Idriss, both a short drive away — and that trio together makes a genuinely rewarding day or overnight. So 'how much time for Meknes' really becomes 'how much time for Meknes plus Volubilis', which tilts the answer toward giving it a proper day if Roman history appeals.

My honest division for most trips: anchor yourself in Fes for two or three nights and let it be the heart of your northern stay, then give Meknes a half-day or one night, combined with Volubilis, either as a day trip from Fes or a stop en route. If you're a true history lover with extra days, Meknes rewards lingering. But if it's a straight contest for limited hours, Fes wins comfortably — it's simply one of the most remarkable cities you'll ever walk into.
