Yes — it's one of the best. Just 3.5 hours from London with no big time difference, Marrakech and the south stay mild and sunny through winter (often 18–22°C by day). Pack layers for cold desert and mountain nights. It's a brilliant value, short-haul winter-sun fix when Europe is grey.
Morocco is genuinely one of the smartest winter-sun escapes from the UK, and it's underrated for it. While Britain is grey and damp, Marrakech and the southern half of the country sit in the mild high-teens-to-low-twenties Celsius by day through December, January and February, with reliable sunshine and crisp blue skies. And you get there in three and a half hours with barely any time difference — no jet lag, no long-haul slog, no overnight flight. For a short winter break it's hard to beat.
The thing to manage is the day-to-night swing. Winter daytimes in Marrakech are jumper-and-sunglasses weather, lovely for wandering the souks and sitting on a sunny riad terrace, but the nights get properly cold, especially out in the Sahara and up in the High Atlas, where it can drop near or below freezing after dark. This isn't a flaw — a desert camp under crystal-clear winter stars, wrapped in blankets by a fire, is one of the most magical versions of the trip — but you must pack layers, a warm coat and a hat. The riads have heating; don't expect Caribbean evenings.
Where I steer winter clients matters. The desert and the south are at their best — comfortable to explore by day and dramatic by night — and Marrakech is in its sweet spot. I'd avoid building a winter trip around the high mountains for trekking (snow and cold) unless that's the point, and the Atlantic coast like Essaouira can be windy and cool. So the classic winter shape is Marrakech, a desert overnight, and the Atlas foothills, all of which deliver sun, warmth in the day and that big-sky clarity you only get in the cooler months.
The other winter bonus is value and space. It's outside the peak spring and autumn windows, so riads and tours are often better priced and the sites are noticeably less crowded — you'll have medina corners and desert dunes far more to yourself. The exception is the Christmas and New Year window, which is busy and pricey, so book that early or aim for January and February instead. For a grey-Britain pick-me-up, a long weekend or a week in Morocco is about the best short-haul winter sun going.
