Surprisingly yes — for first-timers it is one of the best ways to grasp the city fast. A vintage sidecar covers neighbourhoods you would never walk to, with a driver-guide narrating. It is touristy and not cheap, but the access and the joy of it usually justify the spend.

I came to sidecar tours sceptical — they look like the kind of gimmick that exists purely for the photos. And yes, you will get wonderful photos perched in a restored 1960s-style sidecar puttering past the ramparts. But what genuinely won me over is how much ground you cover and how much your driver-guide can show you that walkers and big buses simply cannot reach.

In a half-day you weave from the Medina's edges out to the Palmeraie, through the modern Gueliz district, past gardens and local quarters, with stops your guide picks based on what you are into. Because it is a private little vehicle, it threads streets coaches can't and stops where taxis won't. For first-time visitors trying to mentally map Marrakech, it is honestly one of the most efficient orientation experiences I recommend.

The honest downsides: it is a premium-priced novelty, so on a tight budget it is a luxury, not a need. You are exposed to traffic fumes and sun, so it is less pleasant in peak summer heat. And the narration quality lives or dies on your specific guide — a great one makes it unforgettable, a flat one makes it just a nice drive. Ask the operator for an English-fluent, knowledgeable guide when you book.

Who it suits: couples wanting something romantic and different, photographers, and anyone short on time who wants the city to 'click' on day one. Who should skip: deep-budget travellers, and purists who would rather get lost on foot in the souks (which is also magical, and free). For me it sits firmly in the 'worth it as a one-off treat' column.
