Choose a luxury riad if you want a pool, spa, faultless service and a quiet retreat after busy days; choose a smaller authentic riad if you want family-run warmth, a more local feel and better value. The split isn't real versus fake — both can be genuine. Mix them across a trip for the best of each.

The first thing I tell people is that 'luxury' and 'authentic' aren't opposites in Morocco, even though the words make it sound that way. A grand restored palace riad with a spa is no less a real riad than a six-room family home; they're just different scales of the same beautiful idea — rooms turned inward around a courtyard. So the choice isn't about which is the 'true' experience. It's about the kind of stay, service and atmosphere you want when you close the door behind you each evening.

A luxury riad delivers polish and refuge. Think a plunge pool or rooftop spa, a concierge who arranges everything, refined dining, impeccable rooms, and a hush that's especially welcome after a sensory-overload day in the souks. For honeymooners, for travellers who want to be looked after, or for anyone treating the riad as a sanctuary rather than just a bed, this is worth the premium — the contrast between the medina's intensity and your serene courtyard becomes part of the magic. The cost is higher and the experience, while gorgeous, can feel a touch curated.

A smaller authentic riad trades some of that gloss for warmth and immediacy. These are often run by a family or a single host who cooks breakfast, remembers your name, points you to the bakery they actually use, and treats you more as a guest in their home than a customer. The rooms may be simpler and there might be no pool, but the human connection and the sense of staying somewhere real are stronger, and the value is excellent. For curious, sociable travellers, this is frequently the more memorable stay.

My honest advice is to match the riad to the leg of the trip — and ideally to mix. After a tough desert drive or in a city where you want pampering, book the luxury riad and enjoy being cosseted. In a quieter town, or when you want to feel close to local life, choose the small family-run place. Doing both across one trip costs less than going luxury throughout and gives you the full spectrum: the sanctuary on the nights you need it, and the warmth and authenticity on the nights you want to feel you've truly arrived in Morocco.
