Sidi Boughaba is a protected freshwater lake and nature reserve between Kenitra and Mehdia on the Atlantic coast, designated a Ramsar wetland. Fringed by mimosa and eucalyptus, it shelters marbled ducks, crested coots, flamingos and many migrants, with an interpretation centre and easy walking trails near Rabat.

Sidi Boughaba is the reserve I recommend to travellers who want a gentle, accessible taste of Morocco's birdlife without leaving the Rabat region. It's a long, narrow freshwater lake tucked behind the coastal dunes between Kenitra and the beach town of Mehdia, protected as a Ramsar wetland of international importance. After the arid interior, its green fringe of mimosa, eucalyptus and reed feels like a small oasis.

For birds, it punches well above its size. The lake is a stronghold for some of Morocco's scarcer wetland species — the marbled duck and the crested coot among them — and in winter it fills with ducks, grebes, herons and the occasional flamingo, while spring and autumn bring waves of migrants funnelling down the Atlantic coast. Quiet, reedy and reflective, it's a place for patient watching rather than dramatic spectacle.

What I like for less hardcore guests is that it's easy and well set up. There's a small nature interpretation centre, marked trails and shaded paths along the shore, so families and casual walkers enjoy it as much as the binocular brigade. You can stroll the lakeside in an hour or two, learn about the ecosystem at the centre, and combine it with the beach and old kasbah at Mehdia next door.

Logistically it couldn't be simpler — it's a short drive from Kenitra and well within reach of Rabat for a half-day, no special vehicle or guide required, though a birding guide enriches it. I'd go in the cooler months for the best bird numbers, bring binoculars and water, and treat it as a relaxed nature break rather than a wilderness expedition. It's a lovely, low-effort introduction to why Morocco's Atlantic wetlands matter.
