Accommodation FAQs

Types of Accommodation

What is a riad?

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house with an interior garden or courtyard, typically found in medinas. The name comes from Arabic for "garden." Riads feature inward-facing architecture for privacy, with rooms surrounding a central courtyard with fountain and plants. Many have been converted into boutique hotels offering authentic cultural experiences with modern comforts.

What is the difference between a riad and a hotel?

Riads are smaller (typically 5-15 rooms), located in medinas, offer intimate atmospheres, traditional architecture, and personalized service. Hotels are larger, often in modern districts (Ville Nouvelle), have standardized rooms, more amenities (pools, gyms, restaurants), and international hotel standards. Riads provide authentic experiences; hotels offer predictable comfort and convenience.

What is a kasbah hotel?

Kasbah hotels are accommodations in restored or replica fortified structures, typically in southern Morocco and Atlas Mountains. Built from traditional pisé (rammed earth), they feature fortress-like architecture with towers, courtyards, and thick walls. Many are historic structures converted into hotels, offering unique atmosphere and architectural beauty. Famous examples include Kasbah du Toubkal and Kasbah Tamadot.

What are Moroccan guesthouses (maisons d'hôtes)?

Maisons d'hôtes are family-run guesthouses, similar to European B&Bs. Hosts often live on-site, providing personalized hospitality and local insights. Typically smaller than riads (3-8 rooms), they offer intimate experiences, home-cooked meals, and family atmosphere. Common in smaller towns and rural areas where hotels are limited.

What is a bivouac or desert camp?

Bivouacs are desert camps offering overnight experiences in the Sahara. Basic camps have Berber-style tents with mattresses and shared bathroom facilities. Luxury camps feature en-suite tents with proper beds, private bathrooms, electricity, and upscale amenities. All camps include traditional Berber dinners, campfires, music, and stunning stargazing opportunities. See our Sahara Desert tours.

Are there hostels in Morocco?

Yes, hostels exist in major tourist cities (Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen, Essaouira) catering to budget travelers and backpackers. They offer dormitory beds and private rooms at lower prices than hotels. Facilities include shared bathrooms, communal kitchens, common areas, and often organized activities. Quality varies; research reviews before booking.

What are auberges?

Auberges are mountain lodges or inns, common in Atlas Mountains and rural areas. They range from basic refuges with dormitory-style accommodations to comfortable guesthouses with private rooms. Auberges serve as bases for trekking, offering meals, local guides, and mule services. Facilities are simpler than city hotels but provide authentic mountain experiences.

Can I stay in a Berber village home?

Yes, homestays with Berber families are available, especially in Atlas Mountains. You'll sleep in family homes, share traditional meals, and experience authentic rural life. Accommodations are basic (mattresses on floors, shared facilities, no electricity in some villages) but culturally immersive. These experiences are arranged through specialized tour operators.

Are there luxury hotels in Morocco?

Absolutely. Morocco has world-class luxury hotels and resorts: Five-star palace hotels (La Mamounia, Royal Mansour), international chains (Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, Fairmont), luxury riads (Riad Farnatchi, Riad Kniza), and desert luxury camps. Expect impeccable service, stunning design, spas, pools, fine dining, and premium amenities.

What are classification standards in Morocco?

Morocco uses a star rating system (1-5 stars) for hotels. However, ratings aren't always consistent with international standards. A Moroccan 3-star may differ from European 3-star hotels. Read reviews and examine photos before booking. Riads often aren't officially rated but descriptions indicate quality levels (standard, superior, deluxe, luxury).

Booking & Reservations

How do I choose the right accommodation?

Consider: location (medina for atmosphere vs. Ville Nouvelle for convenience), budget (riads typically cost more than similar-rated hotels), amenities needed (pool, WiFi, parking), authentic vs. modern experience, room size preferences, and reviews from recent travelers. Our tours include carefully selected accommodations matching tour quality levels. See our accommodation guide.

Can I choose specific hotels or riads?

On private tours, yes! Request specific properties and we'll check availability and pricing. On group tours, accommodations are pre-selected to maintain tour costs and logistics, but you can often upgrade to higher-category properties for additional fees. Request accommodation preferences during booking.

Should I book accommodation in advance?

For March-May and September-November (peak seasons), book 2-3 months ahead. During summer and winter, 4-6 weeks is usually sufficient. Last-minute bookings (1-2 weeks) are possible outside peak periods but limit choices. Ramadan, Eid holidays, and Christmas/New Year require advanced booking. Popular riads fill months ahead.

Can I book accommodations directly or should I use your services?

For independent travel, you can book directly via booking platforms or property websites. Our tours include accommodations carefully selected for location, quality, and value, with verified reliability. We secure group rates and handle logistics. For multi-city itineraries, our coordination ensures smooth check-ins and transfers.

What happens if my preferred accommodation is fully booked?

We'll suggest comparable alternatives in the same category and price range, describing differences so you can make informed decisions. Flexibility with accommodation helps us design better overall itineraries. Properties of equivalent or better quality are always offered as substitutes.

Are accommodations guaranteed once booked?

Yes, confirmed bookings are guaranteed. Occasionally, properties have emergencies (flooding, renovations, overbooking). If this happens, we arrange equivalent or superior alternatives at no extra cost. We manage all communications and logistics, ensuring you're never left without accommodation.

Can I see photos of accommodations before booking?

Absolutely. Tour descriptions include accommodation names or categories. Property photos are available on their websites or booking platforms. Request specific property lists during booking process and we'll share links to photos, reviews, and details. Transparency helps you know exactly what to expect.

Do you work with sustainable or eco-friendly accommodations?

Many of our partner properties embrace sustainability: traditional architecture using local materials, solar power, water conservation, local staff employment, organic gardens, and environmental practices. Eco-lodges in rural areas and desert camps emphasize minimal environmental impact. Request eco-conscious accommodations and we'll prioritize these options.

Room Types & Amenities

What room types are available?

Standard options include: single rooms (one bed for one person), double/twin rooms (one double bed or two single beds for two people), triple rooms (three beds), family rooms (accommodating 4-5 people), suites (separate living areas), and connecting rooms (for families). Availability varies by property. Specify room preferences during booking.

Do rooms have private bathrooms?

Most accommodations on our tours feature en-suite bathrooms. Budget tours may occasionally include shared bathrooms, which will be clearly indicated. Traditional riads sometimes have bathrooms across hallways rather than directly in rooms but still private for your room. Luxury accommodations always have en-suite bathrooms with upscale fixtures.

What is Moroccan bathroom style?

Bathrooms range from basic to luxurious. Features may include: walk-in showers (tubs less common), traditional zellige tilework, decorative sinks, local toiletries, bidets or handheld showers (standard in Muslim countries), and varying water pressure/temperature consistency, especially in older buildings and rural areas.

Do accommodations have air conditioning?

Most hotels and riads in hot regions (Marrakech, Fes, Sahara) have air conditioning or at least ceiling fans. Mountain accommodations may lack AC (unnecessary due to cool temperatures). Coastal areas often rely on ocean breezes. Older riads may have portable AC units rather than central systems. Specify if AC is essential when booking.

Is WiFi available in accommodations?

Most tourist accommodations offer WiFi, though quality varies. Cities have reliable connections; rural areas and mountains may have limited or no WiFi. Traditional riad architecture (thick walls) can make WiFi spotty in some rooms. Luxury properties generally have better connectivity. Don't expect consistently fast WiFi everywhere.

Do riads and hotels have pools?

Many riads have plunge pools (small pools for cooling off). Full-size swimming pools are more common in hotels and luxury riads with space. Desert camps rarely have pools. Mountain lodges sometimes have pools. Coastal resorts emphasize beach over pools. If pools are important, specify during booking and we'll prioritize properties with swimming facilities.

Are there elevators in accommodations?

Modern hotels usually have elevators. Traditional riads rarely do (most are 2-3 story buildings with narrow stairs). Some luxury riads have installed elevators. Historic buildings can't accommodate elevators due to structure and heritage restrictions. Request ground-floor rooms if stairs are problematic. Porters help with luggage.

What about accessibility for guests with disabilities?

Accessibility is challenging in Morocco. Modern hotels have some accessible features; historic riads and medina properties rarely meet Western accessibility standards (stairs, narrow doorways, uneven surfaces). We can arrange ground-floor rooms and properties with better accessibility. Contact us to discuss specific needs so we can design appropriate accommodations.

Do rooms have safes for valuables?

Most hotels and many riads provide in-room safes. Smaller properties may have reception safes for guest valuables. Always use safes for passports, extra cash, jewelry, and electronics. Don't leave valuables unattended. Front desk safe deposit is secure when in-room safes aren't available.

What toiletries and amenities are provided?

Hotels typically provide: shampoo, conditioner, soap, towels, hairdryers, and sometimes slippers and robes. Riads often offer local argan oil products and organic toiletries. Budget accommodations have basic soap and towels. Luxury properties provide premium brands, bathrobes, and extensive amenities. Bring personal favorites; specialty items may not be available.

Check-in & Check-out

What are standard check-in and check-out times?

Standard times are check-in 2pm-3pm, check-out 11am-12pm. Specific times vary by property. Early arrivals can usually store luggage until rooms are ready. Late checkouts may be available for small fees or free if rooms aren't booked. Communicate arrival times in advance, especially for riads where staff may not be on-site 24/7.

Can I check in early if I arrive on a morning flight?

Early check-in depends on availability. Contact properties in advance or ask us to arrange. Many accommodations allow early check-in for small fees (50-100 MAD) if rooms are ready. Otherwise, store luggage and explore until official check-in time. Some properties offer day rooms for early arrivals at discounted rates.

What if I arrive very late at night?

Most hotels have 24-hour reception. Riads may require advance notice for late arrivals (after 10pm-11pm) to ensure staff availability. Always inform properties of late arrivals. Emergency contact numbers ensure you can reach someone if problems arise. Taxis are available late-night from airports to accommodations.

Do I need to provide my passport at check-in?

Yes, Moroccan law requires hotels and riads to record guest passport information (number, nationality, entry date). Front desk may keep passports temporarily to complete police registration (fiches de police) and return within a few hours. This is standard procedure, not concerning. Ensure you get passports back before departing.

Can someone else check in for me?

If you're delayed but another travel companion arrives, they can usually check in for the group if they have your booking confirmation. Solo travelers having someone else check in is problematic (passport registration requirements). Contact accommodations directly to explain situations and coordinate solutions.

What happens if I arrive and there's a problem with my reservation?

Present booking confirmations (email, voucher from tour operator). Properties should have your reservation details. If genuine mistakes occur, management resolves them. Our tours include 24/7 emergency contacts; call your coordinator immediately if serious booking problems arise. We intervene to ensure you have proper accommodation.

Can I extend my stay at the same accommodation?

Subject to availability, extensions are usually possible. Inquire with front desk or through us before your tour. Rates for extensions may differ from your tour rate (could be higher or lower depending on season and negotiated rates). Booking early increases extension availability.

What is included with accommodation?

Standard inclusions: room with bedding and towels, daily housekeeping, and breakfast. Additional inclusions vary: WiFi (usually), air conditioning/heating (depending on property and season), toiletries (basic to luxury), and welcome tea (common in riads). Pools, spas, gyms, parking, and other facilities vary by property.

Are accommodations cleaned daily?

Yes, housekeeping is standard daily. Rooms are cleaned, beds made, towels changed, and floors swept/mopped. Some eco-conscious properties offer linen changes every 2-3 days unless requested (water conservation). Luxury properties provide turndown service. If you don't want daily cleaning, place "Do Not Disturb" signs.

Can I store luggage after checkout?

Yes, most accommodations offer luggage storage for departure days, allowing you to explore until evening flights. This service is typically free. Some charge nominal fees for extended storage (multiple days). Ensure luggage is locked and valuable items are removed. Collect storage receipts as proof.

Meals & Dining

Is breakfast included in accommodations?

Most tours include daily breakfast at accommodations. Moroccan breakfasts feature: Moroccan bread (khobz), olive oil, honey, jams, olives, cheese, yogurt, fresh fruit, mint tea, and coffee. Some properties offer expanded buffets with eggs, pastries, pancakes, etc. Continental and American breakfast options are increasingly common.

What if I have dietary restrictions for breakfast?

Inform accommodations in advance of dietary needs. Most can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergy requirements with notice. Vegan options may be limited but manageable (fruit, bread, olive oil, nuts). Properties receive your dietary information from us when booking through our tours. Communicate special needs clearly.

Can I request breakfast in my room?

Many riads offer room service breakfast, especially on rooftop terraces or in your room. Hotels often have room service for additional fees. Request room breakfast when booking or the night before. This is perfect for leisurely mornings, privacy, or celebrating special occasions.

Do accommodations have restaurants?

Larger hotels typically have on-site restaurants serving lunch and dinner. Small riads may offer dinner by reservation (prepared by house chef). Many accommodations don't have restaurants, expecting guests to dine in nearby restaurants (abundant in tourist areas). Riads often recommend and reserve restaurants for guests.

Can accommodations prepare special dinners?

Yes, many riads offer optional traditional Moroccan dinners (typically 150-250 MAD per person) prepared by in-house cooks. Advance reservation is required. Meals often include multiple courses showcasing Moroccan cuisine. This is excellent for first/last nights, relaxation evenings, or when you don't want to venture out.

Are there tea/coffee facilities in rooms?

This varies widely. Luxury hotels often provide electric kettles with tea/coffee. Riads may not have in-room facilities but offer complimentary tea/coffee in common areas anytime. Budget accommodations rarely have in-room facilities. Bring portable immersion heaters if having hot beverages in-room is important.

Do accommodations serve alcohol?

Hotels (especially larger chains and those in Ville Nouvelle) usually have bars serving alcohol. Traditional riads in medinas often don't serve alcohol due to location and licensing. Luxury riads may have alcohol available. You can usually bring purchased alcohol and consume it in accommodations, though some conservative properties prohibit this.

Can I bring my own food to accommodations?

Generally yes, for snacks and personal provisions. Riads and hotels don't mind guests having fruit, snacks, bottled water, etc. Preparing full meals in rooms isn't appropriate (most lack kitchens). Some properties have communal kitchens or kitchenettes. Disposing of food waste properly is courteous.

Location & Accessibility

Should I stay in the medina or Ville Nouvelle?

Medina: Atmospheric, walking distance to souks and monuments, authentic setting, but narrow streets, limited vehicle access, can be disorienting. Ville Nouvelle: Modern amenities, easy vehicle access, wider streets, safer parking, but less atmospheric and farther from main sights. Choose based on priorities: experience vs. convenience. Many itineraries combine both.

How do I find my accommodation in the medina?

Medinas are labyrinths where vehicles can't enter. Properties provide detailed directions from entry points. Taxis drop you at nearest vehicle-accessible point; you walk (5-15 minutes) through alleys. Many riads offer meeting services: staff meet you at landmarks to guide you. Save offline maps and property contacts. Getting "lost" is part of the adventure.

Are riads far from main attractions?

Medina riads are typically within 5-20 minute walks to main attractions. The maze-like streets make navigation challenging, not distance. Once you orient yourself, everything is close. Riads provide maps and directions. Many sights are scattered throughout medinas, so no single location is closest to everything.

Is parking available at accommodations?

Ville Nouvelle hotels often have parking (free or 50-100 MAD/night). Medina riads cannot have parking due to inaccessible narrow streets. Public parking lots exist near medina entrances (50-150 MAD/day). We arrange parking for tours including rental cars. If you're driving, choose accommodations with parking or nearby parking facilities.

How safe are accommodations and neighborhoods?

Accommodations are generally very safe. Properties have locked doors, front desk/staff presence, and often security. Tourist areas are safe with low crime. Medinas are busy and safe during day; quieter at night but still generally safe. Use common sense: lock rooms, use safes, stay aware of surroundings. Violent crime against tourists is rare.

Can I walk to restaurants and shops from accommodations?

Medina accommodations are surrounded by restaurants, cafes, and shops (typically 2-10 minute walks). Ville Nouvelle hotels have restaurants nearby but may require 5-15 minute walks or short taxis. All tourist areas have abundant dining and shopping options within easy reach. Riads provide recommendations for nearby establishments.

Are taxis available near accommodations?

Ville Nouvelle locations have excellent taxi availability. Medina riads aren't directly accessible by taxi, but taxis gather at medina entrance points (5-10 minute walk from riads). Staff can call taxis or guide you to taxi stands. In major tourist cities, taxis are always readily available.

What about noise levels in accommodations?

Medina riads can be noisy: call to prayer from nearby mosques (5 times daily, starting pre-dawn), alley activity, and neighbors. Inward-facing architecture minimizes street noise but not mosque calls. Ville Nouvelle hotels face traffic noise. Mountain and desert accommodations are peaceful. Light sleepers should bring earpacks. Embrace sounds as cultural immersion.

Special Accommodations

Are there family rooms available?

Yes, many properties offer family rooms with multiple beds or connecting rooms. Riads often have suites accommodating 4-5 people. Some properties provide cribs or extra beds for children. Family-friendly accommodations may have pools, game areas, and child-oriented amenities. Specify family size when booking to ensure appropriate arrangements.

Do accommodations accommodate children?

Most welcome children warmly. Moroccan culture adores kids, and staff often dote on them. Facilities for children vary: some have pools, play areas, and family rooms; others are romantic boutique riads less suited for young children. High chairs and cribs may be available but aren't universal. Request child facilities in advance.

Are there romantic accommodations for couples?

Absolutely! Morocco specializes in romantic settings: luxury riads with private plunge pools, rooftop terraces, canopy beds, rose petal decorations, couples' spa treatments, and intimate courtyards. Honeymoon packages often include champagne, special dinners, and romantic excursions. Specify romantic occasions and we'll arrange special touches.

Can solo travelers stay in riads and hotels?

Yes, all accommodations welcome solo travelers. Single rooms (smaller, less expensive) and double rooms at single occupancy rates are available. Solo travelers on group tours may share rooms to avoid single supplements or pay extra for private rooms. Riads' communal areas are great for solo travelers to socialize.

Are there women-only accommodations?

Specific women-only riads and guesthouses exist in major cities, providing safe spaces for female travelers. More commonly, any accommodation is appropriate for solo women or women's groups. Female staff, female-only floors, or arrangements for women's comfort can be requested. Morocco increasingly recognizes solo female travel needs.

What about LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations?

While homosexuality is illegal in Morocco, many upscale riads and international hotels are quietly LGBTQ+-friendly, welcoming all guests discreetly. Some properties are particularly known for inclusivity. Same-sex couples should book double beds (not twins) to avoid questions. Major cities (Marrakech, Casablanca) are more liberal. Discretion is advised.

Can I book entire riads or properties?

Yes, many riads and villas are available for exclusive rental, perfect for families, groups, or special events. Renting entire properties provides privacy, dedicated staff, flexible meal times, and customized experiences. Costs vary based on property size, location, and season. Popular for weddings, anniversaries, and group celebrations.

Are there working/business accommodations?

Business hotels in Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech offer: meeting rooms, business centers, reliable WiFi, work desks, and professional atmospheres. Many riads now cater to digital nomads with strong WiFi and workspaces. Specify if you'll be working and need particular facilities.
