Berber (Amazigh) Glossary

Introduction

Berber languages, collectively known as Tamazight (ⵜⴰⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖⵜ), are the indigenous languages of North Africa. In Morocco, three main Berber languages are spoken:

  • Tamazight (Central Atlas Tamazight): Central Morocco, Middle Atlas
  • Tarifit (Riffian): Northern Morocco, Rif Mountains

This glossary covers essential phrases and vocabulary from all three variants, with notes on regional differences. The Tifinagh script (ⵜⵉⴼⵉⵏⴰⵖ) is the traditional writing system for Berber languages.
