Morocco Hammam & Spa Guide
The ancient art of Moroccan bathing — steam, black soap, kessa, and the slow return to oneself in rooms lit by stars in the ceiling.
What is a Hammam?
The hammam (Arabic for "bath") is a traditional steam bath that has been central to Moroccan culture for over a thousand years. More than just a place to wash, the hammam is a social institution where Moroccans gather to relax, cleanse, and connect with their community. Originating from Roman and Ottoman bathing traditions, Moroccan hammams have evolved into a unique cultural experience that combines deep cleansing rituals with relaxation and social bonding. For visitors, a hammam experience offers an authentic glimpse into daily Moroccan life and an unparalleled spa treatment.

The Hammam Experience
Follow this step-by-step guide to understand what happens during a traditional Moroccan hammam session.
Preparation Room
Undress and wrap in a fouta (thin cotton towel). Store belongings in a locker. Drink water to stay hydrated.
Warm Room (Beit el-Wastani)
Acclimate in the warm room. Your pores begin to open as you relax on the heated marble floor.
Hot Room (Beit el-Skhoun)
Move to the hottest room filled with steam. Black soap (savon noir) is applied all over your body and left to penetrate.
Exfoliation (Gommage)
Using a kessa glove, the attendant vigorously scrubs your entire body, removing layers of dead skin. This is the heart of the hammam ritual.
Ghassoul Clay Mask
Natural ghassoul clay from the Atlas Mountains is applied to hair and body, providing minerals and deep cleansing.
Rinse & Cool Down
Buckets of warm and cool water are poured over you. You gradually cool down, moving to cooler rooms.
Argan Oil Massage
Many hammams offer an optional massage with pure Moroccan argan oil, leaving skin incredibly soft and nourished.
Relaxation & Tea
Rest in a relaxation room with mint tea and sometimes dates. This recovery time is essential for full relaxation.
