Regional Climate Guide
Morocco has remarkably diverse climates. Coastal cities stay mild year-round while the interior and desert experience extreme heat in summer.
Marrakech & Interior
Hot, dry summers with mild winters. The interior sees the widest temperature range in Morocco.
Explore in early morning and late afternoon during summer. Riads with pools are essential June-August.
Sahara Desert
Extreme heat in summer, surprisingly cold winter nights. The desert has the most dramatic temperature swings.
Winter nights in the desert can drop near freezing. Desert camps provide blankets, but bring warm layers.
Atlas Mountains
Cooler at altitude with snow in winter. The High Atlas peaks reach over 4,000m with year-round snow.
Temperatures drop 6°C per 1,000m of altitude. Even in summer, mornings and evenings are cool above 2,000m.
Fes & Imperial Cities
Similar to Marrakech but slightly cooler. Fes sits higher and receives more winter rain.
The medina in Fes provides natural shade. Winter rain makes the ancient streets slippery, so wear appropriate shoes.
Coastal Cities (Essaouira & Agadir)
The Atlantic moderates temperatures year-round. Essaouira is famously windy, earning its nickname "Wind City."
Essaouira is always windy. Bring a windbreaker even in summer. Agadir is warmer and less windy.
Rif Mountains (Chefchaouen)
The wettest region in Morocco. Chefchaouen sees more rain and cooler temperatures due to altitude and northern location.
The blue city is magical in morning mist. October-April sees regular rain, so pack waterproof layers.
Average Monthly Rainfall
Average precipitation in millimeters for Marrakech. Northern cities (Fes, Tangier) receive more rain; the Sahara receives virtually none.
June through August are virtually rain-free across Morocco. The wettest months are November and March, primarily affecting the north and mountains.
