Golden rippled Sahara sand dunes at sunset with a lone figure on the ridge — the destination of a desert tour from Marrakech

Private Desert Tours from Marrakech

Marrakech Tours from Agafay to the Sahara

Marrakech desert tours come in two very different shapes: the close Agafay “stone desert” just outside the city, perfect for a half-day or sunset camel ride and dinner without a long drive; and the great Sahara dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, around 560 km / 9–10 hours away and best done over 3 days or more. This page explains both honestly so you can pick the desert that fits your time — with private transport, expert guides and a real night under the stars.

Two Deserts from Marrakech — Which One Fits Your Trip

The first thing to know about Marrakech desert tours is that there are two completely different deserts, and choosing between them comes down to how much time you have. Just outside the city — around 30 to 40 km, under an hour by road — lies the Agafay, a rolling “stone desert” of bare, lunar hills rather than sand dunes, with the High Atlas as a backdrop. It is not the Sahara, but it is wonderfully convenient: a sunset camel or quad ride, dinner under the stars and back to your riad the same night, with no long drive and easy access for families and anyone short on time.

The real Sahara — the towering orange-gold dunes most people picture — means Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, and the honest truth is that it is not next door. The drive from Marrakech covers roughly 560 km and takes around 9 to 10 hours each way, climbing over the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, dropping through Ouarzazate and the Dadès and Todra valleys. That single fact drives every decision. For most travellers leaving from Marrakech, three days is the realistic minimum to reach Erg Chebbi, sleep in the Sahara and return without spending the whole trip in a vehicle; the drive is split over two days with an overnight near the gorges. A two-day tour can only reach the smaller, lower Zagora dunes — a taster rather than the Sahara of your imagination — while four days or more buys a far more relaxed, scenic pace.

Once you reach the dunes, the experience is the same dream wherever you start: you mount a dromedary at the dune edge in late afternoon and ride about an hour into the sand to your camp, arriving for sunset; you sleep in a desert camp under one of the darkest skies on Earth, where the full arc of the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye; and you climb the nearest dune before dawn as the sand shifts from grey to pink to blazing copper. No experience is needed for the camel trek, and if a child or nervous rider would rather not, most camps can arrange a 4x4 transfer to the same camp. If you are specifically planning the multi-day Sahara journey, our dedicated guide to Sahara desert tours from Marrakech goes deeper on routes, camps and timings.

Plan a October trip

The deep Sahara has two seasons that matter: the comfortable window of October to April and the extreme heat of May to September. The close Agafay desert is more forgiving year-round but shares the cold-night, hot-summer pattern. Nighttime figures refer to the open desert; camp interiors are warmer. Drive times are planning estimates — confirm current road conditions before you lock in dates.

Questions, Answered

Marrakech Desert tours — frequently asked.

What is the difference between the Agafay and the Sahara from Marrakech?+
They are two very different deserts. The Agafay is a rolling “stone desert” of bare, lunar hills (not sand dunes) just 30 to 40 km outside Marrakech — under an hour away — ideal for a sunset camel ride, a desert dinner and back to your riad the same night. The Sahara means the towering golden dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, around 560 km and 9 to 10 hours away, which needs a multi-day tour. If you want convenience and a taste of the desert, choose Agafay; if you want the real dunes and a night under the stars, choose the Sahara and allow at least three days.
How many days do I need for a Sahara desert tour from Marrakech?+
For most travellers leaving from Marrakech, three days is the realistic minimum to reach the great Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, sleep in the Sahara and return without spending the whole trip in a vehicle — the long drive is split over two days with an overnight near the Dadès or Todra gorges. A two-day tour can only reach the smaller, lower Zagora dunes, a taster rather than the real Sahara. Four days or more buys a far more relaxed, scenic pace and suits families, photographers and honeymooners especially well.
How far is the Sahara desert from Marrakech?+
The Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are roughly 560 km from Marrakech — around 9 to 10 hours of pure driving each way, and realistically longer once you factor in the mountain passes, lunch and the photo stops you will want to make. The route climbs over the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, drops through Ouarzazate and the Dadès and Todra valleys, then runs east to the dunes. That distance is exactly why a same-day Sahara trip is not possible and three days is the realistic minimum. Confirm current road conditions before you travel.
Can I do a desert tour from Marrakech in one day?+
Only the Agafay, not the Sahara. The Agafay stone desert is under an hour from the city, so a half-day or evening trip — a sunset camel or quad ride and dinner — works beautifully as a single day. The real Sahara dunes at Erg Chebbi are far too distant (9 to 10 hours each way) to reach and return in a day; even a rushed two-day tour only reaches the lower Zagora dunes. If your heart is set on the towering golden dunes, plan for at least three days.
What is the camel trek like, and is it suitable for children?+
Camel trekking means riding a dromedary in a small caravan across the dunes, usually about an hour from the dune edge to your desert camp, at sunset or sunrise, with no prior experience needed. It is the experience most travellers and children remember above all. We hold reputable welfare standards, capping loads at around 150 kg per animal. It suits families well — young children typically ride with a parent — and if anyone would rather not ride, most camps can arrange a 4x4 transfer to the same camp instead. The Agafay offers shorter, gentler rides for the youngest.
When is the best time for a desert tour from Marrakech?+
October, November, March and April are the prime months, with comfortable daytime temperatures and cool but manageable nights. December to February is pleasant by day but cold after dark — nights in the open Sahara can drop close to freezing, so camps provide heating and thick blankets. Avoid June through August for the deep Sahara, when daytime temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees Celsius. The closer Agafay is more forgiving but follows the same hot-summer, cold-night pattern. Confirm current conditions before you book.
Why choose a private desert tour over a group tour?+
Group tours run to a fixed timetable and a full vehicle, which over a 9-to-10-hour drive is the difference between feeling herded and feeling looked after. On a private desert tour the pace is yours: stop when the light is perfect, take a longer lunch in a valley you love, skip a stop that does not interest you, and split the long drive comfortably over two days. For families especially, a private vehicle with a knowledgeable driver transforms the journey, and you can swap a long camel ride for a short one or a 4x4 transfer to suit everyone.
How much does a Marrakech desert tour cost?+
Prices vary widely by group size, the length of the trip and the comfort level of the camp — a half-day Agafay experience is a very different cost from a multi-day private Sahara tour with a luxury camp (premium camps near Merzouga typically run from around €250–€400 per person per night). Because every private trip is built around your party, route and dates, we quote each one individually rather than advertising a fixed price. Request a current quote and we will reply within hours with an honest, tailored figure.
