Morocco Activities

Fishing in Morocco

Big game charters off Agadir, fly fishing for trout in Atlas Mountain streams, surf casting on empty Atlantic beaches, and bass fishing in turquoise reservoirs — Morocco has water for every angler.

Why Fish Morocco?

Morocco's 3,500 km of Atlantic and Mediterranean coastline, combined with Atlas Mountain rivers and large inland reservoirs, create a diversity of fishing that few countries can match. Deep sea anglers chase the same bluefin tuna and marlin that migrate through the Canary Islands and Azores. Fly fishers find brown trout in cedar-shaded streams that could pass for the French Alps. Shore fishers cast into Atlantic surf alongside local artisanal fishermen who have worked these waters for generations.

The appeal goes beyond the fishing itself. Where else can you fight a tuna in the morning, explore a 1,000-year-old medina at lunch, and watch the sunset from a rooftop riad with your catch prepared by the hotel chef? Morocco combines genuine angling with cultural depth that fishing-only destinations simply cannot offer.

Types of Fishing in Morocco

Deep Sea / Big Game

Where: Agadir, Dakhla, Essaouira, Tangier

Species: Bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, marlin (blue and white), swordfish, dorado, wahoo, barracuda, sharks

Season: May - October (peak July-September)

Price: 3,000 - 15,000 MAD ($300 - $1,500) per boat/day

Experience: No experience needed (crew assists)

Morocco's Atlantic coast sits on the edge of the continental shelf where cold Canary Current meets warm tropical water — a nutrient boundary that attracts large pelagic fish. Agadir has the most developed charter fleet, but Dakhla is where the records are being broken. Expect early starts (6 AM), 1-3 hours of trolling to reach the fishing grounds, and explosive action when the bite is on.

Shore / Surf Fishing

Where: Essaouira, Oualidia, Sidi Ifni, Dakhla, Tangier coastline

Species: Sea bass, sea bream (dorade), mullet, sole, ray, mackerel, corvina

Season: Year-round (best October - April)

Price: Free (no license needed for sea shore fishing)

Experience: Basic casting skills helpful

Morocco's 3,500 km of coastline provides endless shore fishing opportunities. Rocky points, harbour walls, and sandy beaches all produce fish. The Atlantic coast is generally more productive than the Mediterranean. Essaouira's harbour wall is a classic spot — locals fish at sunset with hand lines, and you can join them. Surf casting on remote beaches south of Agadir is exceptional.

Fly Fishing (Trout)

Where: Ifrane, Azrou, Oum er-Rbia headwaters, High Atlas streams

Species: Brown trout, rainbow trout

Season: March - September

Price: 1,500 - 3,000 MAD ($150 - $300) per guided day

Experience: Some casting experience recommended

The Middle Atlas is Morocco's trout country. Streams running through cedar forests and mountain meadows hold good populations of brown and rainbow trout, introduced during the French colonial period. The fishing is technical — small flies, careful wading, clear water. The Oum er-Rbia river near its source is the most famous fishery, but smaller tributaries around Ifrane and Azrou are equally rewarding and less pressured.

Lake / Reservoir Fishing

Where: Bin el Ouidane, Lalla Takerkoust, Al Massira, Sidi Ali

Species: Black bass (largemouth), pike, zander, carp, barbel

Season: April - November

Price: 200 MAD permit + boat rental 300-500 MAD/day

Experience: Basic to intermediate

Morocco's reservoirs (barrages) are stocked with game fish and offer surprisingly good lake fishing. Bin el Ouidane (2 hours from Marrakech) is the standout — a turquoise lake surrounded by Atlas Mountains with excellent black bass fishing. Lalla Takerkoust is closer to Marrakech and popular for casual fishing trips. Carp fishing is productive and growing in popularity among European anglers.

Top Fishing Destinations

Agadir

Deep sea capital

Species: Tuna, marlin, dorado, swordfish, grouper

Morocco's best deep sea infrastructure. Multiple operators, reliable boats, and consistent fish. The port has tackle shops and fish restaurants.

Dakhla

Frontier big game + shore

Species: Giant trevally, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, corvina, rays

Season: Year-round (best March - November)

Charters: 3-4 operators, growing rapidly

The emerging hotspot. Remote, uncrowded, and producing exceptional catches. Often combined with kitesurfing trips. The lagoon offers world-class shore fishing for corvina.

Essaouira

Harbour + coastal

Species: Sea bass, sea bream, mackerel, barracuda, conger eel

Season: Year-round

Charters: 2-3 operators, smaller boats

The most atmospheric fishing in Morocco. Cast from the ancient harbour walls alongside local fishermen, or take a half-day boat trip along the coast.

Ifrane / Azrou

Fly fishing

Species: Brown trout, rainbow trout

Season: March - September

Charters: Guided trips through specialist outfitters

Morocco's trout capital. Cedar forests, clear mountain streams, and genuine fly fishing in an unexpected setting. The town of Ifrane is called "Little Switzerland" for a reason.

Bin el Ouidane

Lake / reservoir

Species: Black bass, pike, carp, barbel

Season: April - November

Charters: Local boat hire at the dam

Stunning turquoise lake in the Atlas foothills. Excellent black bass (largemouth) fishing. The Cascades d'Ouzoud waterfalls are 30 minutes away for non-fishing companions.

Tangier / Strait of Gibraltar

Deep sea + shore

Species: Bluefin tuna, swordfish, bonito, sea bass, grouper

Season: June - October (offshore), year-round (shore)

Practical Tips

Licenses & Regulations

  • Sea shore fishing: no license required
  • Freshwater: annual permit from Eaux et Forets (~200 MAD)
  • Deep sea charters include all permits
  • Catch limits vary by species and region
  • Spearfishing requires a separate permit

Gear & Equipment

  • Charter boats provide all tackle — you need only sunscreen and a hat
  • Shore fishing gear available in port towns (100-300 MAD for basics)
  • Fly fishing: bring your own rod and flies — local availability is limited
  • Bait: sardines, squid, and shrimp are sold at any harbour
  • UV protection is essential — Moroccan sun is intense on the water

Eating Your Catch

  • Charter crews clean and fillet your fish on the boat
  • Many harbour restaurants will cook your catch for 50-100 MAD
  • Ask your riad/hotel if the chef can prepare it (most will happily oblige)
  • Fish markets open early morning — worth visiting even if you don't fish
  • Fresh sardines grilled on the Essaouira harbour wall are a must-try

Booking Charters

  • Book 1-2 weeks ahead in summer (July-September peak)
  • Off-season bookings can often be arranged day-of
  • Ask about boat size, safety equipment, and crew experience
  • Confirm what's included: fuel, bait, tackle, drinks, insurance
  • Tipping the crew 100-200 MAD is appreciated for good service
