Morocco Activities

Skiing in Morocco

Yes, you can ski in Africa. Oukaimeden sits at 3,270 m in the High Atlas, 90 minutes from Marrakech — making it possible to ski powder in the morning and drink mint tea on a riad rooftop by afternoon.

Snow in the Sahara's Shadow

Morocco's Atlas Mountains regularly receive heavy snowfall from December through March. The High Atlas peaks above 3,000 m are often snow-capped well into April. This isn't a novelty — skiing has been practised at Oukaimeden since French colonists built the first lift in the 1930s, and the resort has hosted national and international competitions.

The reality check: Morocco is not the Alps, Rockies, or even the Pyrenees. There are no grooming machines, no snowmaking cannons, and no avalanche patrol. Lift infrastructure is basic. Snow conditions are unpredictable — you might arrive to perfect powder or bare rock. But the prices are extraordinary (a full day for under $50), the setting is spectacular, and the surreal contrast of skiing above a Saharan desert landscape is genuinely unique.

For serious skiers, Morocco also offers exceptional ski touring (randonnée) in the High Atlas backcountry. Multi-day traverses of Toubkal, M'Goun, and the Ouanoukrim massif rival any Alpine touring itinerary for scenery and solitude, at a fraction of the cost.

Morocco's Ski Resorts

Oukaimeden

2,600 - 3,270 m — 75 km south of Marrakech (1.5 hr drive)

Runs: 7 marked runs (beginner to intermediate)

Lifts: 1 chairlift, 5 drag lifts

Season: Mid-December to mid-March

Snow days: 30-40 per season (variable)

Lift pass: 100 - 150 MAD ($10 - $15) / day

Rental: 150 - 250 MAD ($15 - $25) / day

Africa's highest ski resort. Ski in the morning, swim in your riad pool in Marrakech by afternoon.

Accommodation: Limited — hotel Chez Juju, CAF refuge, a few guesthouses

Pros

  • Highest altitude = most reliable snow
  • Chairlift to 3,270 m with Atlas panorama
  • Remarkably affordable
  • Day-trip distance from Marrakech
  • Off-piste potential for advanced skiers

Cons

  • No snowmaking — entirely dependent on natural snow
  • Equipment rental quality is basic
  • Limited on-mountain dining
  • Crowded on weekends when snow is good
  • No avalanche patrol for off-piste

Michlifen

1,800 - 2,050 m — Near Ifrane, Middle Atlas (60 km south of Fes)

Runs: 3 short beginner slopes

Lifts: 2 drag lifts

Season: January to early March

Snow days: 15-25 per season

Lift pass: 50 - 100 MAD ($5 - $10) / day

Rental: 100 - 200 MAD ($10 - $20) / day

Extinct volcanic crater surrounded by Atlas cedar forests. More about the scenery than the skiing.

Accommodation: Ifrane hotels (Michlifen resort hotel, various mid-range)

Pros

  • Beautiful cedar forest setting
  • Very gentle slopes — ideal for first-timers
  • Good accommodation in nearby Ifrane
  • Less crowded than Oukaimeden
  • Luxury option at Michlifen Resort & Golf

Cons

  • Lower altitude = less reliable snow
  • Very limited terrain for intermediate+ skiers
  • Short runs
  • Fewer snow days per season
  • Basic infrastructure

Backcountry Ski Touring in the High Atlas

For experienced skiers, the real draw of Morocco is not the resorts — it's the backcountry. The High Atlas offers world-class ski touring (ski de randonnée) with peaks above 4,000 m, reliable spring snow, and almost zero crowds. A five-day Toubkal Circuit in February or March delivers 15,000+ vertical metres of skiing through terrain that rivals anything in the western Alps.

You need a certified mountain guide (mandatory for the Toubkal National Park), touring equipment, and avalanche safety gear. The standard approach is to hire an IFMGA-certified guide through a Moroccan mountaineering agency, who will arrange mule support, refuge accommodation, and route planning. Costs are approximately 3,500-5,000 MAD ($350-500) per day for a private guide, or 1,500-2,500 MAD ($150-250) per person per day in a group.

Toubkal Circuit

4-5 days

Summit: 4,167 m (Jbel Toubkal)

Grade: PD+ (intermediate touring)

Circumnavigate North Africa's highest peak. Sleep in CAF refuges (Toubkal, Lépiney, Tazaghart). Best in February-March when the snowpack stabilises.

M'Goun Traverse

5-7 days

Summit: 4,071 m (Jbel M'Goun)

Grade: AD (advanced touring)

Remote traverse of Morocco's second-highest peak. Less infrastructure — bivouac camping required. Spectacular Dades Gorge descent. Fewer than 50 people attempt this per season.

Ouanoukrim Couloirs

2-3 days

Summit: 4,089 m (Ouanoukrim)

Grade: AD (steep couloirs to 45 degrees)

Technical couloir skiing on Toubkal's neighbour. North-facing gullies hold powder well into April. Base at Toubkal Refuge. For experienced steep skiers with avalanche knowledge.

Getting to the Slopes

Oukaimeden from Marrakech

Private driver

500-800 MAD ($50-80) round trip. The driver waits while you ski. Book through your riad or our team. Most convenient option.

Self-drive

Rent a car in Marrakech (from 300 MAD/day). The S513 road is paved but winding. 4WD recommended after fresh snowfall — the last few kilometres can be icy.

Day tour

Several agencies offer ski day trips from 600-1,000 MAD ($60-100) including transport, lift pass, and equipment. Convenient but less flexibility.

Grand taxi

Possible from Marrakech but unreliable in winter. The road may be closed after heavy snow. Not recommended as your only plan.

Michlifen from Fes or Meknes

From Ifrane (20 km)

Short drive from the town. Many Ifrane hotels arrange transport. Petit taxis can take you for 50-100 MAD.

From Fes (80 km)

1-1.5 hours via the N8. Well-maintained road through the Middle Atlas cedar forest. Self-drive is straightforward.

From Meknes (70 km)

Similar drive time as Fes. Route passes through Azrou — worth a stop to see the Barbary macaques in the cedar forest.

Stay in Ifrane

The smartest option. Ifrane has the best hotels near any Moroccan ski area, plus restaurants and a charming European-style town centre.

The Morocco Ski + Culture Combo

The unique appeal of skiing in Morocco is the contrast. No other country lets you combine genuine alpine skiing with Saharan desert, ancient medinas, and North African cuisine in a single trip. A sample itinerary:

Day 1-2

Arrive in Marrakech. Explore the medina, Jemaa el-Fnaa, souks, and riads.

Day 3

Ski day at Oukaimeden. Depart Marrakech at 8 AM, ski until 3 PM, return for a hammam and dinner.

Day 4

Drive to Ouarzazate via Tizi n'Tichka. Visit Ait Benhaddou kasbah. Stay in a kasbah hotel.

Day 5-6

Sahara desert — camel trek, luxury camp, stargazing at Erg Chebbi.

Day 7

Return to Marrakech. Farewell dinner on a rooftop terrace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you really ski in Morocco?

Yes. Oukaimeden (3,270 m) near Marrakech has operated since the 1930s and is Africa's highest ski resort. Michlifen near Ifrane also offers skiing. The season runs December through March with variable snow conditions.

When is ski season in Morocco?

Mid-December to mid-March, with January and February being the most reliable. Oukaimeden averages 30-40 snow days per season. Check conditions before driving — there's no snowmaking equipment.

How much does skiing cost?

Remarkably little. Lift passes are 100-150 MAD ($10-15)/day. Rental gear is 150-250 MAD ($15-25)/day. Including transport from Marrakech, a full day costs $50-80 per person.

How do I get to Oukaimeden from Marrakech?

It's 75 km south of Marrakech, about 1.5 hours by car via the Ourika Valley. Options: private driver (500-800 MAD round trip), self-drive (4WD recommended), or organised day tour.

What is the terrain like?

Oukaimeden has 7 runs served by a chairlift and drag lifts, mainly beginner to intermediate. 670 m vertical drop. Off-piste opportunities exist for advanced skiers but without avalanche patrol.

Yes. Snowboard rental is available at Oukaimeden. The wide, open terrain is well-suited to boarding. No terrain park, but natural features offer some variety.

Is Michlifen worth visiting?

For beginners and families, yes. It's smaller and gentler than Oukaimeden, set in a beautiful cedar forest crater near Ifrane. Better accommodation options than Oukaimeden.
