Morocco Trains, the Easy Way
From the Al Boraq high-speed line to scenic cross-country routes, this guide covers ONCF routes, tickets, classes, and station tips for travelling Morocco by rail.
Why Travel Morocco by Train
ONCF (Office National des Chemins de Fer) operates Morocco's railway system, connecting over 30 stations across the country's most visited cities. Train travel is comfortable, affordable, scenic, and avoids the stress of navigating Moroccan roads.
The crown jewel of the network is the Al Boraq, Africa's first high-speed train, which covers Tangier to Casablanca in just 2 hours at speeds up to 320 km/h. Combined with regular services reaching Marrakech, Fes, Meknes, Rabat, and Oujda, trains are the smartest way to see Morocco's imperial cities.

Al Boraq: Africa's First High-Speed Train
Inaugurated in November 2018, the Al Boraq (named after the mythical creature in Islamic tradition) connects Tangier to Casablanca at speeds up to 320 km/h. Built by Alstom using TGV Duplex technology, it reduced the journey from 4 hours 45 minutes to just 2 hours 10 minutes.

- WiFi: Available (free, priority bandwidth)
- Power outlets: At every seat + USB
- Price: 229-350 MAD ($23-35) Tangier-Casablanca

Al Boraq Tips
- Book early: Al Boraq can sell out on weekends and holidays. Book online at oncf-voyages.ma up to 30 days in advance.
- Tangier station: The high-speed station is Tanger Ville (not Tanger Med port). It is centrally located.
- Casablanca station: Trains terminate at Casa Voyageurs. Transfer here for Marrakech, Fes, and other destinations.
- Cafe car: An onboard cafe sells coffee, snacks, and sandwiches. Prices are fair.
- Luggage: Overhead racks and end-of-car storage. No luggage limits or extra fees.
First Class vs Second Class
| Feature | First Class | Second Class |
|---|---|---|
| Seating | 2+1 (wide, reserved) | 2+2 (standard, unreserved on regular trains) |
| Air conditioning | Always | Newer trains only |
| Crowding | Rarely crowded | Can be very crowded at peak times |
| Price premium | 40-50% more than 2nd class | Base fare |
| Power outlets | Yes (newer trains) | Limited/none |
| Recommended for | Journeys over 2 hours, families | Short trips, budget travelers |
Our recommendation: For journeys under 1 hour (e.g., Casablanca-Rabat), second class is perfectly fine. For longer routes (Casablanca-Marrakech, Casablanca-Fes), first class is worth the $5-10 upgrade for the comfort and guaranteed seat.

Train Travel Tips
Arrive 15-20 minutes early
Trains generally depart on time. Allow extra time at busy stations like Casa Voyageurs.
Carry your passport
Occasionally checked on trains along with your ticket. Always have valid ID.
Bring snacks and water
While cafe cars exist on some trains, smaller services have no food. Station vendors sell sandwiches and drinks.
Download offline maps
Phone signal can be patchy on some routes. Download Google Maps offline for navigation at destination.
Guard your luggage
Keep bags visible and within reach. Use overhead racks in your line of sight. Lock zippers if possible.
Confirm your platform
Platforms are announced on screens and by PA system (usually in French and Arabic). Ask staff if unsure.
Respect quiet cars
First class is generally quieter. Keep phone calls brief and volume low.
Plan connections carefully
Allow at least 30 minutes for connections at Casa Voyageurs. Check schedules in advance.
