It depends on which coast. The Atlantic is cool with strong currents — swim only in patrolled, flagged zones. For easy, warm family swimming, choose the Mediterranean north (Saidia, Martil, M'diq), the sheltered Oualidia lagoon, or developed Agadir bay. Always check for lifeguards, heed flags, and watch young children closely.
This is one of the most important questions I answer, because the honest reply prevents disappointment and keeps families safe. Morocco absolutely has great family-swimming beaches — but not the wild Atlantic ones the postcards show. The open Atlantic (Essaouira, Taghazout, the whole south) is cooled by the Canary current so it's chilly even in summer, and it carries strong rip currents. Beautiful for walking, surfing and photos; not where I put small children for a carefree splash.
For genuinely family-friendly swimming I steer people to three kinds of place. First, the Mediterranean north — Saidia, Martil and M'diq near Tetouan — where the sea is warm, calm and shallow-shelving, the closest to a classic European family beach. Second, the Oualidia lagoon on the Atlantic, where a sandbar shelters warm, flat water perfect for toddlers. Third, the developed bay at Agadir, which is sheltered enough and has lifeguards and amenities, making it the most practical Atlantic option for families.
Wherever you go, I give the same safety rules. Swim only where there are other people and, in season, lifeguards — many busier beaches fly coloured flags (green safe, yellow caution, red no-swimming) and you must obey them, because the Atlantic's currents are no joke. Keep young children within arm's reach, avoid remote unpatrolled coves for swimming however pretty, and ask local guesthouse owners which spot and which tide is safest that day; they know their water.
Season matters too: real swimming weather is roughly June to September, especially on the Mediterranean side which goes quiet outside that window. So yes, Morocco is good for family beach time — you just have to pick the right coast for it rather than assume any beach will do. Tell me the ages of your children and I'll match you to the specific bay that fits.
