Yes — Morocco has superb dark skies and real astronomy infrastructure. The Oukaïmeden Observatory high in the Atlas above Marrakech is a professional research site, and the desert near Merzouga and the Agafay region offer some of the clearest stargazing on earth, with luxury camps running guided telescope sessions under the Milky Way.

Yes, and it's one of Morocco's most underrated joys. The serious astronomy is at the Oukaïmeden Observatory, perched at over 2,700 metres in the High Atlas above Marrakech — it's a genuine professional research facility, chosen for its altitude and exceptionally clear, dry skies, and it has hunted for asteroids and exoplanets. It's better known to skiers (Oukaïmeden doubles as Morocco's ski resort), but its existence tells you everything about how good the skies are up there.

For most travellers, though, the magic happens in the desert rather than at a research dome. Out at Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes, far from any city light, the night sky is staggering — the Milky Way arcs overhead so brightly it casts a glow, and shooting stars are routine. The luxury desert camps we work with often have telescopes and run guided stargazing, with someone pointing out planets and constellations while you lie back on cushions after dinner. It's frequently the moment guests remember most from the whole trip.

Closer to Marrakech, the Agafay 'stone desert' gives you a similar dark-sky experience without the long drive south — camps there do astronomy evenings too, which is perfect if you only have a night or two. And because Morocco sits at a good latitude and has so much arid, cloudless terrain, the conditions hold up across much of the country once you're away from the cities. Clear, dry desert air is exactly what astronomers and photographers dream of.

If night skies excite you, tell us early and we'll design around it: a moon-phase-aware itinerary (a new moon transforms the experience), a camp with proper telescopes and a knowledgeable guide, and ideally a clear-sky window. Pairing a desert stargazing night with a daytime visit toward Oukaïmeden gives you both the wild dark-sky spectacle and the story of Morocco's real observatory. It's pure wonder, and it costs almost nothing extra to get right.
