Paradise Valley — a palm-lined gorge with natural rock pools in the Atlas foothills — is the best day trip from Agadir, about an hour north. Strong alternatives are the surf village of Taghazout, the walled inland town of Taroudant, and the coastal jewel of Essaouira about three hours up the coast.
My top pick from Agadir is Paradise Valley, and it lives up to the name. About an hour north into the Atlas foothills, it is a palm-fringed gorge where a river has carved a series of natural rock pools and small waterfalls in the red rock. You hike a short way in, swim in the cool clear pools, and jump from the rocks if you are brave — it is a gorgeous, refreshing escape from the beach heat and a complete change of scenery from the coast. Go earlier in the day to beat the crowds, and note the pools can run low in high summer.
For surf and a laid-back coastal vibe, Taghazout is a short drive up the coast and easy to combine with Paradise Valley. Once a sleepy fishing village, it has become Morocco's surf capital — mellow point breaks, surf schools for beginners, beachfront cafés, and a backpacker-meets-yoga atmosphere. Even if you do not surf, it is a pleasant spot for lunch and a beach afternoon with more character than Agadir's resort strip.
Inland, Taroudant rewards anyone wanting a taste of old Morocco that Agadir itself lacks. About 80 km east, it is a handsome walled town often called 'little Marrakech' for its impressive ramparts and lively, hassle-light souks, set among olive groves and argan trees. It gives you the medina-and-spice-market experience without the long drive to Marrakech, and it is far calmer. For Berber culture, the Souss valley around it is genuinely traditional.
If you are willing to spend more time in the car, Essaouira up the coast is the big-ticket day trip — about three hours each way, which is a long day but doable. The walled, breezy Atlantic town with its ramparts, fishing port, and artsy medina is one of Morocco's loveliest, and far more atmospheric than Agadir. My honest ranking: Paradise Valley (and Taghazout) for the easy half-day escape, Taroudant for authentic walled-town culture, and Essaouira if you have the appetite for a longer but more rewarding drive.
